never mind. I got back to my afternoon school and got to the article. But I'm confused. Sine the 9600Pro is ofcourse the next step up from 9500Pro and the 9800Pro is the next step up from a 9700Pro, then why does the 9600Pro have a more advanced .13micron make-up then the 9800Pro's .15micron make-up? And wont that update to .13 make it have a new solution for exsessive heat like the GeForceFX have?

It's not running as fast as the 9800 is at ~400 and has a smaller bus of 128 bit instead of 256.

It should, but a drop from .15 to .13 wont make that much difference. Why they've chosen to go that route i dont know.
Just noticed something else: Quote:
Just wait, it wont be long before gainward release the 'Gainward Golden Sample Ultra 5600-8X 256 XP Ultra Limited Edition Ultra Extra Spiffy FX' |

It's like Street Fighter on the SNES all over again.

![]() but yeah... anyways. Phily Baby, why don't they give the Radeon 9800 use .13micron too? But more importantly, why give the lower model it and not the higher model?

Unfortunately for you Radeon fans, the GeForce FX beats the Radeon 9700 AND 9800 by as much as 50% in current DirectX 8 benchmarks.
I highlight this because all the games people 'set score' by (QIIIA, SS2: Second Encounter, etc) use none of the features these cards were designed specifically to support. Yes, we can use 3DMark '03, but considering we have no DX9 games yet it's results are utterly useless as there's nothing to set them against except other hardware configs (ie. at the moment you could say that 5,000 marks in 3DMark '01 is sufficient to play splinter cell at decent resolutions. I don't know if it is or not, I just made that up as an example). While you can see what board runs a card best etc from 3D Marks, what it won't tell you at the moment is how well they will play DX9 games. Once DX9 games appear, THEN we can get a proper handle on these cards. Once you put the Radeon 9800 Pro against the GeForce FX (whatever it's highest model number is) in Doom III, then we will have some meaningful results. Until then, check out this link for a view of how they compare. Note the (comparitively) pitiful performace of the GeForce4 Ti4800, which until a few months ago was the height of graphics performance. Such is the way of things in this business. |

Tomshardware has different results altogether:

If a card is designed for DX9 then the only way to measure its true performance is to benchmark it using a DX9 test. Here's why. My system with a geforce2 mx400 was good for around 6500 3dmarks in 3dmark 2000, with my geforce4 ti4400 it gets around 12,000. Thats less than a 50% improvement in dx7 tests. However with 3dmark2001 the mx400 could only muster around 3500, while i got over 11,000 with the geforce4, almost 3 times as fast in dx8. Sure, 3dmark2001 is still the standard at the moment, but you cant accurately measure a dx9 cards performance using it. Remember back when the geforce3 came out? It was only 18% faster than the geforce2 ultra in DX7 tests, but closer to 40% faster in DX8. |

Which is exactly what I said.
FYI, the 4800 is the AGP8x 4600. The 4800SE is the AGP 8x 4400. The 4200 clearly doesn't warrent a new model name - it just gets called the 4200 with AGP 8x. Catchy.

Probably so they can con people who don't know about these things, because as you say, SE normally means it's extra special so they think they're getting a bargain.
In much the same way PCWorld (here in the UK) tend to flog 2.8Ghz P4s with GeForce4 MXs in them as 'games machines', when a 1.5Ghz machine with a GeForce4 Ti4800 would probably beat it hands down for games performance. It's boarderline false advertising, but they get away with it, and people get suckered in because "it's got a bigger number so it must be better". Ahhh, marketing...
