I've had the problem since before I installed windows media player 9 (I was using version 8).
To clarify, I still have the problem.. so it didn't matter if I had 8 or 9. |

But it seems to have to do with the codecs (or whatever is installed with them)
You should try installing/deinstalling the nimo or tsunami codec packs |

Codec packs are evil. Do not use them!
Always install all codecs separately. http://www.divx.com http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html http://www.3ivx.com/ http://codeczone.virtualave.net/fixes.htm | http://www.moviecodec.com http://www.doom9.net http://www.pcsupport.dk/support/codec.htm http://admin.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm http://www.411forsex.com/help/codecs...ls/codecs.html http://www.skynet4ever.tk/ http://www.inf.ufpr.br/~rja00/programs.html Use GSpot to determine which codecs/filters are required. |

Same problem here
Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I used GSpot to see that all the appropriate codecs are installed, and still crappy playback...until I got patient. It seems that Winamp3 will EVENTUALLY play the file at the correct speed (as long as you have the required resources and the right codec). At first, it goes slow. If it's an mpeg or mpg, it will begin playing normally after 4 or 5 seconds. If it's an avi, it depends on how new the codec is. Red vs. Blue Divx 5.0.5 files take almost a minute to start going right. I don't know what is causing this, since Media Player 9 does just fine with all these files. Maybe the following will help:
OS: WinXP Pro CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton -cache = 640KB RAM: 512 MB PC2700 System Bus: 333MHz Divx: All 3.11 Alpha and 5.0.5 pack Filetypes tried: AVI (various codecs, some I encoded myself), MPEG-1 Music files play wonderfully. I'm watching an AVI episode of Red Dwarf right now that took a little over 3 seconds to start going. |

Nevermind, I may have the solution
Sometimes I get obsessive over things, so I did here and got it to work, 100% of the time. Go into your Preferences and look under the DirectSound thingy under Audio. You can do one of two things: either disable DirectSound or decrease the buffer sizes. What's wrong is that Winamp is waiting for the sound and video to sync up, and with a large buffer it's reading in more video than audio so depending on how fast your computer is and how compressed the file is, it could take anywhere from a few seconds to forever to sync up. Honestly, it works really good with DirectSound off and I can't notice any audio quality difference, and the video responds instantly. Hey, if anyone can give a good reason to use DirectSound, I'm listening, but I can deal with the loss of tiny playlist fades to let my video work right. To sum my after midnight rambling up:
To fix slow video in Winamp3: 1. Options/Preferences 2. Audio/DirectSound 3. Either DISABLE DirectSound for instant video playback, or shrink the buffer sizes to make it start a little faster. Yet another way Microsoft slowly ruins your life. BTW I use OpenGL for games. "Sleep is no substitute for caffiene." |
