out_ds 2.2.6 stutters when modem initializes
Noticed a problem with new Winamp 2.90, specifically due to the out_ds.dll 2.2.6. Winamp 2.90, which I just installed today, stutters while the modem dials up my internet connection. This never happened with 2.81. I did some testing and determined that the significant change is due to the new direct sound output plugin. I put both the new plugin (2.2.6) and the old (2.2.1 - came with winamp 2.81) in the plugins directory for both winamp 2.81 and 2.90. Anyway, no matter what file type I'm playing (wav, ogg, mp3, wma, etc), I get stutters and a couple gaps in playback while initializing my modem, when using the out_ds 2.2.6. So for now, I've got out_ds 2.2.1 selected as my default output plugin on Winamp 2.90.
Btw, I'm running Win2k Professional, have a Sound Blaster 16 soundcard, and HCF 56k PCI modem. Thanks for all the work you guys keep up with. |

Have you tried checkmarking "enable cpu usage control" in out_ds config? (buffering tab)
Also maybe try checking/unchecking "allow hardware acceleration" and "create primary buffer" (device tab) |

I tried the cpu usage control option (which, for the record, was never checked on 2.2.1 and it still worked perfectly when the modem is dialing). I also tried checking "allow hardware accel" and "create primary buffer" and various combinations of the 3 options. But 2.2.6 still stutters when my modem initializes, no matter what combination of options. So I'm back to 2.2.1.
And by the way, both old and new wave-out plugins stutter when my modem is dialing, same as out_ds 2.2.6. Don't know if that'll help figure out what's up with the new out_ds, but it's some info at least. Thanks. |

I had a Conexant HCF 56k PCI modem myself a long time ago. That's a nasty winmodem, which you'll notice pauses the machine for a fraction of a second when it picks up or drops the phone line.
I remember that issue, your best bet is to check the options in out_ds for one that is less CPU sensitive. This may mean increasing the buffer perhaps. Alternatively, try using plain old wave out. Of course, the best solution would be to replace the modem with a hardware PCI one (good luck finding one that isn't a winmodem), or an external modem. Not the cheapest of solutions, but certainly the easiest, especially if you do other time sensitive tasks on your machine. |

Actually, the easiest solution is for me to keep using the old out_ds version 2.2.1, because I've got no problems with it when using my modem, and I don't have to check _any_ options, experimental or otherwise. I realize that my modem may be screwy, but there's a problem that the new out_ds has issues with the modem and the old out_ds doesn't.
