Access my music library at home - how?
Hi - what is the best way for me to be able to access my music library here at home from a PC at work? Is there a program I could use or do I just need to set up some kind of ftp server? I have a 1 meg line at work and the bandwidth is seldomly used.
Thanks in advance, Steve. |

there's a lot of programs you can use. Go to the winamp 3 components. There's something called muse.net or something like that. I haven't tried it, but that is what it's for.

I use an FTP server. Serv-U. It's awesome for setting up an FTP server. You can then access your files via IE or an FTP client. I have all of my hard drives set up for easy access thru the web. If you've never used FTP thru a web browser here's how it works:
(spaces added so the forum software doesn't make it into a URL or screw up the way it's displayed) ftp : / / xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx / = anonymous login, no password needed ftp : / / username : password @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx / = login as a user I'm using an older version of Serv-U... v2.5 I found it on Kazaa or one of those services a year or two ago and it's been a lifesaver. In fact, I host 6500+ files on my web page from my FTP server. It works great. |

yeah, I use an ftp server as well, but these programs can be easier to use for many people. Not as much control as with an ftp server though.

I disagree. An FTP server is so easy to use. At least the Serv-U software is. Setting up users is a breeze. Just a handful of settings and you've got a user set up. Each user can be set to their own folder(s) and I love the fact you can use anonymous as a user---which is what I use for my web page links. But really, you could incorporate a username/password into your web page links just as easily.
You can use your web browser (IE) to view the file structure as if you were looking at your local hard drive. I can do everything I can do locally from a remote computer, with the exception of running applications and seeing them on the remote end. Every hard drive has its own user name. i.e. user "C" is my C: drive and so on. So all file functions are covered and available from anywhere. It's so nice having access to all my files---all I need is a connection to the internet and Internet Explorer. The sheer power of being able to link up files to a web site is awesome. I've also written a small program that watches my IP address. If my cable company changes my IP it pops up and tells me, then all I have to do is run another small program to replace the IP address in my HTML files, then upload them to my web site. This is just a sample pic of what a typical browsing window looks like for one of my hard drives, using IE. Note the user name in the status bar is "j"... which is my J drive.
