Winamp 2.9x, doesn't understand directory/file shortcuts?

It seems that Winamp no longer recognizes any shortcuts in Windows. For example, when I try to add a file to winamp by double-clicking on a directory shortcut, it adds that shortcut file to the playlist, rather than opening the directory. I know this feature existed in previous Winamp versions (2.81?), since I regularly used MP3 directory shortcuts.

playlist buttons > add > file > doubleclicking on a .lnk file that points to a local directory works here (win2k/wa2.91)

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1, Winamp 2.91. I use the playlist buttons > add file > double-click on a .lnk file (MP3.lnk) that points to a local directory (D:\MP3). What happens is the file "MP3.lnk" is added to the playlist. I do not understand why I am unable to navigate into that directory instead. Any ideas, or anyone else with this problem?

I uninstalled Winamp 2.91, and installed Winamp 2.81. The problem does not happen for me with 2.81, but it exists for 2.90 and 2.91, Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1. Something must be different in 2.90 and 2.91...
