MS Paint for Skins

How would someone go about using MS Paint for skins? I mean, it's not like there are layers that you can save. Once something is done, you can't go back, right? Is there any type of guide somewhere that teaches the basics of using paint for winamp skins?

Btw:

Right. MSPaint has no layers. However, MSPaint does have THREE undos! WOW! Those are enough to get you through the day. However, if you're skinning in MSPaint, it must be pretty damn easy to fix your mistakes anyways.

One of my most popular skins was done totaly in MSpaint, with the help of a scanner for some bits... near on half a million d/l's

ALL of my 2.9 skins were updated using MSpaint, quick and easy...

Umm, how do I know how big to make the "paintable" area? There aren't exact pixel definitions or anything.

Ok, I've got main.bmp mostly done. Anything I can do to make it better? Should I even continue working on it?

Please post .jpgs or .pngs... but don't save the J-PEGS in Paint.

So far, it just looks like a colourmod of the base skin.

The white is too bright to be a highlight. I didn't mean that bright.

Nice colours.

Give it a little variety - keep it up!

[Edit] The black is too dark to be a shadow, too. Note: Don't use those indents on buttons. It makes it look like they're pressed. Put the highlight on top, and the shadow on the bottom. [/Edit]

Thanks Cleanup. But I think I might have to change a lot of it. I thought skinner's atlas defined the size of how everything on your skin should be, not clickable area, lol. A couple people recommended other shapes than just rectangles and squares. I guess I'll have to work it out somehow.

Absolutely.

Actually, i think psp is easier to use than ps, but that's just because it's what i'm used to working with.

I think its more a matter of the artist rather than the program- I used to use PSP, but then I switch to Photoshop because I found it much less time consuming to do stuff.

Whoa. Maybe I can start an MSPaint Skinners' Club.

Of course, I'd be lazy, unethical, and eventually the whole thing would fall apart, 'cos I'd be farting too much - and eating too many fresh waffles... and... that's like, bad.

Hunh. Everybody read my MSPaint Skinning Tutorial.

my first skin was made with MSPaint. I do not recommend it, however, it's not only the missing undo option, but much more the missing layers. Layers allow you to test different options, place elements more freely and look at the overall outcome of different compositions.

However, I use MSPaint to 'compile' the skin once its design is finished, i.e. cropping and preparing the needed bmps and fixing the inherent winamp bugs. You might want to try template amp for this job, it contains all needed masks.

good luck, can't wait to see your first skin
