I don't think the old genres like FPS, RPG etc really fit anymore. Look at Metroid Prime or System Shock 2 crossing FPS and RPG, or 3d platform games having an adventure or RPG element. Developers know that simple blasters or hardcore RPGs are niche markets - by crossing over genres you reach far more people. So my answer? It's a driving RPG shoot-em-up thingy.
