WMV Crashes 2.91

Was reading Penny-Arcade as usual, and noticed this nifty little video of how Gabe makes his strips. Winamp is my default player for all media ever since you added video support, and I have never had any problems with any other video (including other WMV files). This one on the other hand, crashed the program with the typical windows xp error: "This program needs to terminate for blah-di-blah reason".

Naturally, I next tried downloading the video and opening it in WMP9, but I didn't have any problems there, so I tried again in Winamp, this time with the file on my hard drive, and it gave me the same error.

I can't get it to crash.
The video plays ok, but the audio is borked.
Can't hear any audio in any player (WMP8, WA3, WA2)

WMP says the properties are:
Video codec: Windows Media Screen v7
bitrate: ~98kbps
Audio Codec: Acelp.net G.729 (www.voicelab.com | www.spiro.com)
@ 16kbps, 16KHz, mono

Apparently I've got that codec installed (one of the default WinXP ones),
but I'll be damned if I can get it to work for that video.
All the audio samples on voicelab.com play ok, so the codec must be ok too.
At a guess, the error is in the video itself.

I would say the video might be bad.

Well, based on the content of the video, I would assume that it isn't supposed to have any audio...

If the codec is Windows Screen v7, and it will run in WMP, doesn't that mean I have the codec installed? Or is it possibly a codec that is specific to WMP?

Yeah, but if you look at File -> Properties in WMP, it says it DOES have audio, encoded with ACELP.net audio codec. This is a default Windows codec, listed as Spiro Lab Telecom under Sounds & Audio Devices Control Panel -> Hardware -> Audio Codecs -> Properties.

If it isn't supposed to have any audio, then WMP would say "None" under Audio Codec.
WMP reports it as 16kbps, 16KHz, mono
whereas Winamp says 0kbps, 16KHz, mono

As for the video codec, it's just standard Windows Media Video v7.
This codec is installed by default with WMP7 and later.
Though like I said, I don't have any problems with the vid.

Hmm, it crashed Winamp for you? No crash here for me.
Well, I played the first 2 or 3 minutes ok before stopping it, didn't let it play for the full 10 mins.
Have you got WMP9 as well? (I've stuck with the default XP WMP8 version)

in combination with the faulty audio . . . ?

Very strange for me in winamp2.9 i get picture but no sound, in WMP no picture.

using window media player 9.

i downloaded 200k or so of it and those played fine, no sound though

edit: no wmp9 installed

Looks like it could be the WMP9 codecs to blame then.
All those who are having problems with that file,
try reinstalling the WM Audio/Video v7/8 codecs.

btw. there was no need to install the highly intrusive WMP9.
If you try to play a file in WMP8 which uses the v9 codecs/filters,
then WMP8 automatically downloads & installs the v9 codec package for you.
You then reinstall the v7/8 codecs afterwards, and everything is groovy again.
It worked for me anyway, heh
