Linux Command

i have my dnas and dps sitting on a remote linux system. i have to launch and connect the two through ssh. i can get them up and running but i cannot figure out the commands for stopping the dnas server and reloading the playlist and so on. currently to kill the process i have to do a "kill [pid]" but sometimes this does not work and it hangs and the server needs to be restarted to kill the process. ive been having to do this everytime i wanted to load another playlist. anyone have any suggestions? it gave a few commands in the help file but i cant get them to work, tha thanks.
