bandwidth

alright im about to get myself a host and i just randomly picked one and these were the prices per listener:

24 kbps stream $ 0,70
32 kbps stream $ 0,80
48 kbps stream $ 0,90
56 kbps stream $ 1,00
64 kbps stream $ 1,20
80 kbps stream $ 1,50
96 kbps stream $ 1,70
128 kbps stream $ 2,00

I'm not exactly sure what to get for shoutcast purposes or exactly how much differnt 128 kbps would be compared to a 24?

The difference is quality.

Try listen to several 24kbps and 128kbps stations.

You'll need to ask yourself:
1. Do I have enough upload to source the DNAS?
2. What sort of listeners do I want to support?

If you want to support dial-ups, then 24kbps is your maximum.
If you want to support broadband, milk your bandwidth for all it's worth.

The difference between 24kbps and 128kbps?

Listen to my station @24kbps.
And to D I G I T A L L Y I M P O R T E D @128kbps and hear the difference.

I should choose 32 or 48kbps, so you don't pay *too* much.

just a helping hand
Bean-net.net offers the following prices:

24kbps = $0.50
56" = $1.00
80" = $1.50
128" = $2.00

basically the sound quality is broke down as follows (in a gerneral listening since):
24kbps is similar to that of an AM radio broadcast
56" is similar to that of an FM radio broadcast
80 " is near CD quality sound
128 " is CD quality or better

Remember that even though you have a better bandwidth it doesnt mean that your listeners will hear you station correctly... Those with lower bandwidths (such as 56k dial up) will experience station skipping and rebuffering problems on streams higher than 40 kbps. Even most high band people may experience skiiping and the like from a 128kbps stream or high. Just a heads up to keep you listeners in mind
Hope that helped

I'd Recommend 56kbps

I actually recommend for a starter station to run at 40kbps..and as the need grow add an upper bandwidth of 80 kbps for the high bandwidth listeners...

That way no one can complain
