Why wont my Winamp play while Im in a Half-life mod?????
my winamp plays music fine when i tell it to, but when i enter a counter-strike game, it automatically mutes itself. I looked everywhere for the option to fix it, in CS and in winamp, but i couldn't find it

Win 2000, integrated Audio(AC97 drivers)
I run win 2000, with integrated audio
I currently have winamp 2.91, but i tried 2.8 and 3.0. none worked in CS. My other media players worked though with CS.

Is DirectSound Output selected?
If WaveOut is active, switch to DirectSound output instead. Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output: (the hi-lighted output plugin is the active one). Also try configuring DirectSound Output to use your ac'97 driver (Output Device -> drop down menu) and checkmark "enable hardware acceleration" if it's not grayed out. |

Half-Life Settings
make sure that half-life is not set to create a primary sound buffer.
I had the same problem in Quake II under the options I had to set max compatibility instead of max preformance... this set a primary DS buffer or didn't, respectively. unfortunately I do not know what the option is in Half-Life...but it is probably Create Primary DS Buffer. hope that helps. |

Yes, that could well be the cause.
Alas, I don't have those particular games . . . though I've been playing UT2003 and GTA_ViceCity recently, and Winamp 2.9x plays perfectly ok in the background for me (M-Audio Revo soundcard, DX9.0a, WinXP). Take a look in the game options -> audio section . . . |

I got the same problem and solved it by installing an up-to-date DirectX Version.
