Association with Audio CDs WinAMP v2.80
I am unable to uncheck the "Associate with Audio CDs" box in Preferences. By "unable" I mean, I uncheck it, but when I go back it is ALWAYS checked. Even if I just click to another Prefences section and then back, the box is checked once more.
This version was the first install of WinAMP on this computer. WinAMP: v2.80 CPU: PIII 850Mhz OS: Win2000 SP2 RAM: 256Mb DVD: Toshiba SD-C2402 w/ firmware 1H09 Sound: ESS Maestro2E PCI AudioDrive Computer: NEC Versa SXi notebook |

And you've made sure that the Winamp Agent is disabled first?
Prefs -> Setup -> Agent: uncheck all 3 options Close & reopen Winamp Now try to uncheck "associate with audio cd" The Agent maintains associations so other players can't steal them. If the problem persists, post back here and tell us which other player you want to be the default. Also confirm that none of the files in the Winamp dir have the "read only" attribute, including the dir itself (c/o rt click -> properties). Main file to check is winamp.ini Also confirm that you are logged on as admin and have full read/write permissions. |

I have the same problem on wa 2.91
I have the same problem on both my work computer and my laptop at home.
Work computer: P4 2.4Ghz Compaq/256MB ram , XP SP1 Home computer: PIII 933MHz Toshiba portege/256MB , non SP1 Winamp 2.91 - april 16. 2003 I've tried the things mentioned in Egg's post , the error still persists. I want to use WA2 as the default player , but uses EAC for ripping , and the autoplay of cd's in wa seems to lock up EAC (v0.9b4) and I'll have to reboot the computer to get it running again. I previously have installed Winamp3 on both computers v3.0b - build 488 Any suggestions? thanks, Ivar |

By saying you've got the same problem, you mean you can't seem to uncheck "associate with audio cd" in Winamp prefs? (ie. it's checkmarked again when you close & reopen Winamp?)
Did you uninstall Winamp3? Could you please expand a bit on the situation with EAC. EAC is already open at the time, yes? But you're not actually using it? You then insert an Audio CD, Winamp opens and starts autoplaying it. EAC then freezes up? Or does it freeze if you try to rip tracks from the CD whilst Winamp is playing it? (Note: You can't play and rip a CD at the same time). |

I can go into into options/preferences and uncheck the box, close and then enter the menu again and the box is still checked.
I havent tried to uninstall WA3 yet.(unlike some others , I havent found that it sucks rhinoceos dung.. ), but for playing mp3s in the background , its hard to beat the lean&mean wa2.Will try uninstalling wa3 to see if it makes any difference. I've now turned off the autoplaying function in xp , so its not a problem for me that wa2 is the default association for audio cds. The issue with wa and eac is that I'm unable to open EAC if wa2 have been opened and closed before. It just freezes when opening , it seems like it cant find my cd-drive. I need to reboot again to get eac running. (I'm not expecting to be able to run wa and eac simultaneously) Note: this is only on my Toshiba laptop. I havent installed EAC on my work computer yet. Will try that to see if I can reproduce the problem. thanks, ivar |

No, there's no need to uninstall Winamp3.
I was just enquiring, that's all. (there's a known bug in wa3 uninstaller where file associations aren't released) I don't use EAC (well, I've used it in the past, but haven't reinstalled it since my last reformat a couple of months ago). I can't reproduce the problem with other rippers, eg. CDex. Is "enable digital audio extraction" checkmarked in Winamp 2.91 Prefs? (Plugins -> Input -> CD plugin -> config) Checkmark it if it isn't. (requires winamp restart for changes to take effect) As for not being able to unassociate . . . Are you sure the Winamp Agent isn't running? The only known conflict between running Winamp and Winamp3 simultaneously is with the Agent. Only one version of the Agent can run (because they both have the same filename - winampa.exe). If I remember rightly, another Winamp3 bug is that even if you uncheck "maintain file associations" during setup, the Agent still gets enabled. Only problem here is that if Winamp 2.x is running at the time, the Winamp3 Agent controls Winamp 2.x instead . . . (It's not easy, but I hope I explained that clearly enough). Right click the taskbar -> Task Manager If winampa.exe is listed under applications or processes, end task on it. Start -> run -> msconfig Startup tab If Winamp Agent (winampa.exe) is listed, uncheck it. (note: Agent also needs to be disabled in both Winamp and Winamp3 Prefs first) |

wa3 agent is installed and disabled, wa2 agent is not installed at all.
I'll try a different version of EAC too to see what happens |
