2.91 and track time display
ive looked through the forums and found a lot on this subject.. but nothing that i found really works
so.. i open up my music folder and drag a buncha files into the winamp playlist they all get there safely.. but the times arent right some files say that the track length is something like 17 minutes (when it isnt).. others say something like 11 seconds... (when they arent).. and others say nothing at all wierd.. when i select them to play, however, winamp displays the right time this started happening when i removed all my track tags to re-tag them.. so i did it again.. all tags gone.. and im still getting this this time, i used MMJB to remove the tags.. but the times should still read correctly.. right? i mean winamp does get the times right at one point or another so.. it doesnt seem like MMJB's fault... thats why im postin thanks! |

It has nothing to do with ID3 tags. It is VBR headers. Music Match and some other programs wrote VBR (variable bit rate) file headers differently.
Anyways, Winamp 2.92 (due out soon) will have support for the VBRI headers and time display should work correctly. But if this seems to happen on ALL MP3s, even CBR (constant bit-rate) ones you may have something wrong with Winamp. Like a poor third-party MP3 decoder (like MP3Pro or MAD, though I never heard of any having that problem). Then you might want to try to completely uninstall and reinstall Winamp. |

yeah.. it doesnt happen to all my mp3s, but it does happen to a decent amount
when i have an MP3 thats VBR, it means the bitrate changes throughout the song.. right? so you can clearly see the bitrate changing while its playing in the bitrate.. shower.. on the winamp main wondow, right? but.. i most of the files that i have the track length problem with.. dont do the varying thing can an MP3 be VBR, and yet not change bitrate at all, or very little throughout the song? thanks!! |

If it's vbr, it will say so in the MPEG/ID3 Editor
(Alt+3 or right click playlist entry -> File Info) You best bet would be to not use the lousy mmjb to rip your cd's. Use CDex or EAC instead (both freeware), with the Lame Encoder. vbr mp3's created by LameEnc do not pose any problems for Winamp and other players. Note: Winamp 2.92 (coming soon) will also include a CD Ripper (as well as having better support for FhG vbri headers) For now, you can test all your mp3's for corruption with MP3Utility, and you can try to fix any broken vbr headers with vbrfix btw, are you using the default Nullsoft in_mp3.dll decoder in Winamp, or have you installed some 3rd-party plugin (mp3pro, mad, mpeg123, etc)? |
