Hurricanes To Be Named After Musical Artists?

![]() 2003 Hurricanes To Be Named After Musical Artists Are you ready for Hurricane Madonna? How about Tropical Storm Pink Floyd? In an effort to pump up America's interest in the flagging weather program, the National Weather Association (NWA) has voted to name the 2003 hurricanes after popular musical artists. "We're trying to get away from the stuffy names we've used for the past 50 years," said one NWA representative. "Naming the hurricanes after musical artists is just the start. In 2004, every storm will have its own sponsor, so get ready for Hurricane AT&T, Tropical Storm TimeWarner, and Tropical Depression Wal-Mart." While the idea of renaming the hurricanes met with general approval, some voiced concern over the musical artists selected. "I can understand Hurricane Elvis," said one meteorologist. "But Hurricane Kenny G? When people hear that Hurricane Kenny G is coming toward their city, do you think they're gonna evacuate?" "The names are too long," said another guy who really likes talking about the weather. "Hurricane Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark just doesn't sound good. Plus, their songs weren't that great." The NWA stands behind their choices, saying that the musical artists chosen represent a wide variety of past and present stars. |
