My sound disappears...
Hi!
I have a little problem that occours sometimes. I play some music with winamp, and then after a while, maybe some hours, it stops playing suddenly, and then all sound that usually comes out of my headphones, don't come. It's like my computer is muted. And to fix this, i have to restart. Does this problem have anything with winamp to do? If so, what IS the problem?

Think so...
And one other think that happens... When i am going to shut down after the sound have disappeared, winamp won't close, untill I press the "end now" button. And i am now pretty sure it is winamp that is causing this

Have you tried Rocker's suggestions?
Another suggestion Try switching between the waveOut and DirectSound output plug-ins... Winamp > Ctrl+P (for preferences) > Plug-ins > Output > select 'DirectSound' or 'waveOut' Note: Usually DirectSound is suggested for WinXP or Win2000 and waveOut for Win 9x, ME or NT4 We can't really help you without some system specs... - Windows Version? - Memory? - CPU & Speed? - Soundcard? - Videocard? - DirectX version? (Start button > Run... > type DXDIAG > click OK > System tag) - Which file types do you experience troubles with? (MP3, MIDI, WAV, OGG, MOD, AVI, NSV and so on) - Winamp version? - Do you have any 3rd party Winamp plug-ins? |

Winamp may be the indirectly culprit. The next time this happens, I suggest looking in your task manager to see if it's stalled or not. Instability of application are often traced back to some hacked up driver of the OS, or something like that. Ctrl + Alt + Del ( JUST ONCE) and see if it's reporting the NOT RESPONDING message. Try the other suggestions as well.

To find what soundcard or video card you have, take a look at the invoice, packaging list or other documentation that came with your computer. Or, try the following link...
ComputerHope.com: How to determine what type of sound card I have? If you don't find the System Information icon in the Accessories folder, it may be in the System Tools sub-folder (inside the Accessories folder). If you are not familiar or uncomfortable with the inside of computer, I would not suggest using the "opening the computer" as the other method. You can also use System Information to find what you have for a video card, click on Display under Components. Have you had any success with changing the output plug-in? |

I was just typing up my reply to Mor7y and was going to suggest the same thing.
@Mor7y Also, as far as the output plug-in is concerned... The DirectSound plug-in is the recommended one for WinXP, so I would suggest to keep it as is. However, if you want try changing it to waveOut follow the instructions that I provided in my first reply under "Another suggestion". The highlighted output plug-in is the current one. Before changing plug-ins, wait and see if updating the sound drivers solves the problem. |

Fine. But do you know the make/model of the motherboard?
Can you open up the comp to get the model # ? This is usually printed somewhere on the motherboard... You could also try an app such as Aida32 to determine motherboard make/model... |

I also have the same problem. All sound disappears from all programs. I am using winamp 5. It usually occurs after it has been paused for a while, and then I try to play. No sound, and whole system is silent. Tried killing off processes, didn't find the right one. Only solution so far is to restart, sometimes just log out and in of Windows XP.
Hope this will be fixed sometime. |
