Sound but no picture with Internet TV

When i try to connect to an internet TV channel under winamp 5.01/.03, the sound plays fine, but I get no picture.
I had the problem with winamp 5.01, just downloaded 5.03, and still no picture.
I can play any local video file just fine (divx, mpgs, asf/wmv, etc..).
I installed the VP3 codec, still no picture.
I've got a gforce ti4400 card and latest drivers. I unchecked the overlay option, not resolving, but it's not likely to be the problem anyways.

Ever since this thread started, I've seen a recurring theme... The VAST, VAST majority of people experiencing problems are using Windows XP.


So, if you have the time to do a test installation of Windows 2000 on a new partition, I'd suggest giving that a go, or failing that, try rolling back to an older version of the Detonator drivers (if you're using "ForceWare" drivers, they're not really designed with the GeForce Ti in mind, they're for the FX range, and therefore won't result in as good performance for the older GeForce cards)...


Also, don't stick to the WHQL logoed drivers, they're not always necessarily the best versions to get. Usually the NVidia drivers (not sanctioned by Microsoft) elicit better results in 3D applications such as gaming.


I'd also check inside the DirectX Diagnostic Tool ("dxdiag" (no quotes) from the Run prompt), and make sure that, in the Display tab,

DirectDraw Acceleration is enabled
Direct3D Acceleration is enabled

and (though this is really for gaming)

AGP Texture Acceleration is enabled.


If none of them are enabled (especially DirectDraw), then you have a driver issue - check Windows' configuration for the Graphics card, including the amount of hardware acceleration used (this can be checked via the Troubleshooting tab, accessed via the Advanced button in the Display Properties applet in Control Panel / right-clicking on desktop and choosing Properties).





Failing that, I would still blame Windows XP as the culprit. It likes to cause unforeseen problems with some combinations of hardware (and not for everybody with the same configurations, either)

I'm using WinXP, and I'm still yet to find a video which won't play perfectly in Winamp.
Tested with MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, DivX, XviD, OGM, WMV, ASF.
Athlon XP 2400+, Radeon X700, M-Audio Revo, DX9.0c.

Basically, I think it's all down to codecs & DirectShow filters.
It's especially those dodgy codec packs which cause most of the problems.

All you need are:
ffdshow (for: DivX, XviD, MPEG4, H.263/264, and many others)
OggDS Filter for .OGM
An MPEG-2 DVD Decoder, eg. Cyberlink PowerDVD / Intervideo WinDVD / Gabest (though ffdshow can also be configured to decode mpeg-2)*
Haali Splitter for demuxing MP4, MKV, OGM containers (add ;MP4;MKV;OGM to in_dshow extension list)
AC3Filter for AC3 audio layer (ie. if video uses ac3 audio)
CoreAAC (if video uses AAC audio)
Windows Media 8/9 codecs for ASF/WMV/MPEG-1
QT Alternative, for MOV

Then if the relevant file extension isn't currently listed, add it to the Extension List in the DirectShow Decoder config (Winamp > Prefs > Plugins > Input > in_dshow > config). Though note that Nullsoft in_qt.dll plugin is recommended for QuickTime MOV, instead of adding ;MOV to in_dshow config.

Note that ffdshow can be configured to handle most video and audio decoding, including divx, xvid, mpeg2, aav, ac3, vorbis, and many more, so there's a high possibility that ffdshow is the only thing you'll need to install (but you might still need to configure it to make it the default handler for some formats).

Once installed, go to: Start > Programs > ffdshow > video decoder configuration
Under "Codecs", make sure DivX 3/4/5 and XviD are both set to enabled.
If disabled, click where it says "disabled" and change the drop-down menu to "libavcodec",
or for mpeg2 change it to "libmpeg2"
etc.

You might also need to enable some formats in the ffdshow Audio Decoder config.


If the video still won't play, then use MediaInfo to determine the required audio & video filters.

eg. other video formats might include:
Matroska (mkv, mka)
Real Media RM (do NOT install the evil RealPlayer!)
etc etc.


And all codecs/filters should be installed individually, not all at the same time.


If your system / graphics card is old, then yes, you should also uncheck "allow overlay" in Winamp Prefs.

And Chris Woods' expert advice in the post above is certainly top notch.
Though I have no sympathy for people who install WinXP on old OEM systems with hardware not designed for it.

Your system shouldn't have any problems handling NSV streams.
What is your internet connection type/speed?
What's the average bitrate of the streams you are trying to view?
Have you tried all streams, including the Nullsoft TV ones?
ALL the required plugins and decoders for NSV are included with Winamp 5.03 Full.
There is no need to install any external VP3/4/5/6 codecs.

Also note that some of the listed NC17 pr0n streams are fake/dodgy, ie. they have no video content, just a pop-up which attempts to install p.o.s. spyware.
These 172.*.*.* stream ip's are constantly being banned from the server, but they keep coming back like a bad virus.
It is strongly recommended that you uncheck "allow media to auto switch to now playing" (Prefs > Media Library > Library Options).
This issue will be resolved when 5.04 is released, as all activex/java scripts will be disabled by default.

Further steps are being taken to prevent these evil streams from being listed
(eg. autoban by bot, ip ban, etc).

I've gotten DivX and XVid coded MPG files that play audio but not video. Loading the codec made the problem go away. Both these codecs are free. You may have to load the divX exe then choose not to load the playa in the install.

Sounds like those "Mpeg" files are actually .avi files which have the wrong file extension. If you open them with G-Spot, and they give you full video and audio stream information (i.e. they DON'T say "MPEG Stream" then you should rename them to .avi files for the sake of correctness.

I have the same problem and i can't get it to work right, i can't play them, i tried the codecs and the plugin and it didn't work out, it says "MCI Error: Incompatible Media" I tried to switch the ext. to avi and didn't work. I got one mpeg to work but i couldn't skip through or stop it, just froze winamp. any ideas? I do have XP and a Geforce 3, but it worked just fine up until about a week or two ago. i reinstalled many times too. I have the newest version of winamp.

You can try Christophe's in_mplayer plugin.

Note: it's still in beta stage and is currently unsupported,
so please do NOT post requests for tech support within this thread.

All being well, Christophe (or someone else) will start a new in_mplayer thread in the Winamp Discussion forum soon.

All decoding is done internally, via the included mplayer.dll
so no DirectShow Filters are required
(because mplayer doesn't use DirectShow)

Also note, it's open source (GPL)...
so if any developers are interested in contributing, please feel free.

Ok, not sure if I'm helping here, but I had the problem where winamp shows .mpeg but now .avi..

It was solved by installing the DivX codecs,from

No need to install the player.

Restart winamp, and it works (for me at least )

Excellent stuff. I totally overlooked the fact that you might not have the DivX codecs installed.


XViD will also play DivX-encoded media (and it's totally opensource too, which I like - www.xvid.org for the source code, and links to compiles of the binaries to install it).

A couple of problems with what you just said:


1) You gave NO system information whatsoever, so it's nigh impossible to analyse what the problem could be and suggest some fixes.

2) You're typing in big letters, which, contrary to what you might think, won't make people help you faster. I'm amazed I replied (you caught me in a good mood).

3) We do this out of our own free time, don't expect us to be a 24/7 permanent helpdesk at your beck and call.



Now then, post again with DETAILED information on what OS you're using, what mix of hardware you have (motherboard, graphics card especially), what version of Winamp, what video you're trying to access (codecs used etc), and we _MIGHT_ be able to help you.

Use GSpot to find out what codec you need, if it says DIVX or DX50 get ffdshow or XviD instead of DivX otherwise it'll stop working once you install XP SP2*.



*For future reference: DXN said they're going to fix it so any version above 5.20 should work again.

Internet TV is still not working for me. When I click a stream on the media library, any stream, the audio starts playing but the video window never opens up. When I open the video window manually and drag and drop the stream link into it, the audio starts playing but the video window continues to show the Nullsoft Video logo.

This seems to be a different problem than the one others are having so hopefully it will be a quick fix.

This is on a fresh install of Winamp 5.

In the new version of winamp 5.05 i have problem with notifier...

There are some skins which support "Show Album Cover (requires internet connection)" in version 5.05 it shows the title of the song on notifier but instead of the album cover it shows a small window with bottom and right side bar. Can i do anything to fix it?

I think Winamp developpers should work more on the video problem with Winamp. We haved video problems on 2.x, we haved it again on Winamp 3.x, and its again the same thing on version 5.x.

Winamp stay an audio player for me, the videos never worked fine on Winamp. Thats the reason why i have passed to the JetAudio player that play anything fine...

Ever since I updated from Winamp 5.03 to newer versions I couldn't get any mpg or mpeg files run in winamp.
Winamp doesn't seem to recognise these files as vidoe files but starts the audio playback OR doesn't even start the audio. If that's the case the file's also 0 seconds long (For Winamp).

If i use other players like BS player or Windows Media Player (/Classic) with these files they work and have also worked on previous versions of Winamp.

Did you install video support?
If not, then the MPEG Audio Decoder (in_mp3) will try to play the audio part of the mpeg videos.
Make sure you installed Winamp 5.05 Full with video support
(in_dshow.dll should be in the Winamp\Plugins folder).
And make sure MPEG and MPG are listed in in_dshow config extension list.
There's no difference between video support in 5.03 and 5.05.

Works perfectly for me, every time :/

hi all!

only one tv works for me, the one with the most viewers. that is "GIGA.DE Live-Stream". if i try to watch any other tv, winamp only displays "buffer: 0% stream.nsv", but the percentage doesn't advance. later it changes to "connecting to host stream.nsv". it's almost the same with the internet radios, only the first two (by popularity) works.

it is possible for me to download any videos from "winamp.com Videos".

i have a broadband internet connection (T1), and i'm behind a proxy server i think. but then why only 1 channel works?

Problem fixed. I have tried all existings codecs packs and this not solve the problem. What i did? Uninstalled completly Winamp (and deleted the plugins folder) and reinstalled Winamp 5.05. Now the videos work... Dont know why the problem happened !!

It seems that we have the exact same problem.

I can play any local video of any format just fine, but no video for NSV streamings.

Clean install of 5.05?
Which streams exactly?
Do the Nullsoft TV (NTV) streams play ok?
Encoded with vp3.1, vp5.0 or vp6.1?
If only vp6.1, try installing the vp6 codecs.
Is Nullsoft NSV Decoder (in_nsv.dll) even listed under: Prefs > Plugins > Input?

Copy the .ax file to the C:\Windows\System32\ folder. (Really, any permant folder will work)

Start > Run > "regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\[filename].ax" (no quotes, replace [filename] with the name of the .ax file.) > OK

I want to post that I'm having trouble with WINAMP 5.05

I downloaded the new version. But when I tried to play video clips. I only get the sound with no picture.

I'm running Windows 98 and my computer is a Compaq Presario 5220.

I have unchecked the overlay box. It still didn't help.

The file extensions of the video clips are .wmv

A few people have said that maybe I don't have the correct codecs to play such files in WINAMP. But I thought I had downloaded the corrects ones.

Here's a list of what I've downloaded:

DivX 3.11 Alpha, ffdhshow, ac3 filter, Microsoft Direct X 9.0, DivX codec, Oggd filter, QT Alternative, and Windows Media 8-9 codec.

So what codecs am I missing? What are the best codecs to download in order to play any media player? Should I uncheck both allow video hardware overlay and allow YV12 overlay mode in order for it to play both the video and sound? Why am I having this problem and how do I fix it? I really need help.

Windows Media Codec should do it but maybe you need an older version (don't know if they're backwards compatible).

You can use GSpot to see if the right codec is installed (press Render in the DirectShow section).
