Error ripping track #1: can't open destination file
Has anyone else had this problem with Version 5.04? I've successfully ripped my CD once (after I'd first installed Winamp) however I'd deleted the finished product as I was unhappy with the way that Winamp had created multiple folders for each and every song.
![]() Now everytime I try to rip either a single track or an entire CD I get the same error over and over again. I've tried changing the destination folder, rebooting the PC, messing around with some of the settings however no joy. I love Winamp but this is killing me ![]() ![]() Any ideas would be appreciated. |

1. Upgrade to Winamp 5.05 (or whatever the latest version is at the time)
2. Copy & paste the text from the following input boxes here: Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> CD Ripping > Output File Settings tab: Specify destination folder = ? Specify naming convention = ? Also include settings in the Encoder tab (encoder used, bitrate/quality, etc). And provide an example of the CD you are trying to rip (artist - album - etc) Please also include all relevant system specs (cpu, ram, mobo, cd-rom, windows os, directx, hjt log) Apart from that... From the Troubleshooters sticky: Error ripping track #1: Can't open decoder - Aborting... http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....65#post1223065 ...which is similar, but not quite the same, heh. |

Specify naming convention = <Artist> - <Title> - \ <Year> - <Album>
There's your problem. Using "Pink Floyd - Animals" as an example, this will make Winamp try to create the following freaky folder\filename structure: E:\Ricci\My Music\Pink Floyd - Pigs on the Wing 1 - \ 1977 - Animals.mp3 E:\Ricci\My Music\Pink Floyd - Dogs - \ 1977 - Animals.mp3 E:\Ricci\My Music\Pink Floyd - Sheep - \ 1977 - Animals.mp3 hehe You've obviously changed the default setting of: <Artist> - <Album>\## - <Title> What folder\filename structure do you want Winamp to create exactly? |

Actually I really don't care so long as when I rip the CD's all the tracks go into a single folder entitled with the album name so, I guess I'm saying I'm open to your suggestion there.
BTW: Thanks heaps for replying so quickly. |

I'd got this "can't open destination file" after update to 5.05. My solution was not mentioned above!
Important for me was to remove the "\" in the default settings of: <Artist> - <Album>\## - <Title> After deleting the backslash the error message didn't pops-up anymore. Greets, Pieter |

Destination Folder that currently exists. Get rid of the <Artist> - <Album>. Add it to Naming Convention <Artist> - <Album>\## - <Artist> - <Title>

I also got the "Can't open Destination File" on Winamp Pro 5.05 but my directory structure and naming convention was OK. I only had problems with two CDs: Fiona Apple - When the Pawn... and Genesis ...And Then There Were Three...
The problem was the ellipsis (...) on the end of each album title from CDDB (the one at the beginning of 'and then there were three' is OK). Remove the offending dots and it will rip OK. Dave |

Error ripping track #1 Can't open destination file
I have this error with some CDs, not all. I'm using winamp 5.06. That problem does not occur with Musicmatch Jukebox, however. Why just with Winamp? All my settings for destination directory, etc. are ok, because Winamp works with about 90% of the CDs I rip.

Winamp v5.08
Destination Folder = D:\Locker\Mewzik Naming Convention = <Artist> - <Album>\## - <Title> Encoder = MP4 (AAC) v1.0 Quality = 192 kbps Sony Viao Centrino 1.7 GHz 512 RAM Windows XP Pro DirectX 9.0 I believe --- Receiving the message "Can't open destination file - Aborting". Earlier solutions didn't help, any advice? Edit: Noticing a previous poster pointing out trouble with ellipses, well the CD title is "Glass Casket - We Are Gathered Here Today...", maybe that's the problem? Edit #2: That's what the problem was. NO ELLIPSES IN SONG/ALBUM TITLES FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!! Edit #3: "Error - Can't open temporary file!". Fork. Still not working. Edit #4: Uninstalled, Reinstalled, no errors. ^^ Last edited by Philanthropy; 31st December 2004 at 08:52. |

Can't access desination file
I've edited the CDDB title and there are no ellipses. I get the "Error ripping track #1--can't access destination file" very intermittently--about 5% of the CDs. I'm using 5.08d which I just downloaded. Help, please.

Check the file length. Your output file formatting may exceed the path length limitation for Windows (I believe it's 254 characters). If you right-click the CDROM's playlist in the Media Library, Edit CD Info, shorten the names of the tracks, and Save, you may have a successful rip -- I just solved the same problem that way.

I'm with dragon wolf on this one. The file names are short. No one at Winamp seems to know what to do.

I get the same error with CD's that have full stops in there name, eg Kenny Wayne Sheppard - Trouble Is... To get rid of this problem i simply removed the ... from the album name, this should work, if not remove the "\" from the output file settings so it would be like this "<Artist> - <Album> - ## - <Title>" This will generate your file sin your main output folder rather than it's own seperate folder wtih your destination folder,(On closer inspection it seems that track 1 goes to its own folder while the others goto the destination folder eg. My Music) to get over this just place the remaining files in the folder generated by winamp (Should have track 1 in it) and your problem is solved.

1. The specified Destination Folder doesn't already exist 2. You've chosen some unconventional/illegal Naming Convention structure, as in riccid's case above 3. The "Artist\Album" folder or "Artist\Album\filename.xxx" file already exists, and is possibly in-use/locked or has the read-only attribute, and therefore cannot be overwritten 4. There's an ellipsis (...) at the end of the album name, or some other non-conventional/non-latin/illegal characters in the artist/album/title tags (always check the cddb CD Info details before clicking the Rip button). Also see Known Bugs. Note that it is a Windows issue where it cannot create a folder with "..." at the end, and not Winamp to blame. But yes, I agree that if there's any illegal/unconventional characters in the folder/filename structure, then Winamp should automatically remove them, or replace them with eg. underscores... Update: Note, this particular issue was resolved as from v5.093 and later. 5. You're using a 3rd-party mp3 or aac/mp4 decoder (input plugin) which does not support Winamp's CD Ripping feature (eg. the buggy MP3Pro plugin is known for this) 6. Some other concurrently running process is locking the cd drive and therefore blocking Winamp access to it... which is why we ask for a HijackThis log. |

I am having the same problem and have checked for problems 1-5 above and everything checks out. It sounds to me like Winamp has a problem with this new version - I never had this happen prior to 5.094 and the "work arounds" to get it working are pretty bad PR - there should be a FIX to this problem - from what I can tell a LOT of people have wasted a LOT of time trying to figure out why it isn't working. I'm still waiting to hear a solution that actually works for me. A reinstall doesn't even fix the problem.

Then shouldn't there be a "reset default settings" option to make sure we're all working with the same scenario or fix this for people who are having this problem? As a developer that makes perfect sense to me...

I was having all kinds of problems with this. I was using the My Music\<Artist>\<Album>\<Artist> - ## - <Title> setup and kept getting the error message.
Winamp was creating the <Artist> folder, then the folder was marked 'Read Only' or locked somehow, and Winamp couldn't create any folders or files under the <Artist> folder. I went to 'Properties' for "My Music" and set all sub-folders and files to not be 'Read Only' and now it rips just fine. |

I'm having the same exact problem this thread was started for (Failure to open the encoder) and I'v gone through several reinstalls/uninstalls/installs and no cigar. This is a problem occuring out of the blue, and I have not changed anything since... What could be the problem?

The problem is AOL purchased Winamp so the already poor software development has been upstaged by incredibly poor customer support (look at the response they gave me - "we can't recreate the problem"...maybe you should try harder!...or more than once)...what would you expect from AOL? Sorry...but it had to be said...

No. AOL has owned Winamp since 1999, so you're totally wrong there.
Almost everone else who's posted has had their problem solved, including quewoulderniedo, because they all provided the requested/required info to help us diagnose and resolve the problem, whereas you didn't :/ Sure, one or two people posted later on in the thread and got ignored, but hey, these things happen when you hijack other threads instead of starting your own personal thread, heh. |

Ah - my mistake - I always thought the poor programming was due to a lack of budget but since AOL has owned Winamp for that long I guess there's really no excuse other than sloppy code...and my problem has been posted all over the web - plenty of people have been having this problem - this is not unique to me as you seem to be implying...there's plenty of info out there for sufficient testing...but what am I in the great ocean of AOL customer support issues?
