Noise Sharpening plugin?

Does Winamp have a Noise Sharpening plugin?

Foobar having one is causing some hype online.

Now it does.

(Hacked together in about a minute, it could probably be refined some.)

Edit: slightly improved, now goes to 200% as in foobar

Hi --

Sorry, but I'm not very familiar with a lot of this stuff.

What, exactly, does it do, and how do you get it to work?

Thanks much.

The file is a Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio preset. While Winamp is not running save or copy the file to Winamp's Plugins\DSP_SPS folder.

In Winamp you can use gaekwad2's preset by...
1. Ctrl+P (for preferences)
2. Plug-ins > DSP/Effects
3. Nullsoft Signal Processing Studio DSP > Configure button
4. Load button
5. Open 'noise sharpening 0.2'
6. make sure 'Enable processing' is checkmarked
7. adjust the slider to your liking

To be completely anal: the attached file is a zip archive, the .sps file has to be extracted into DSP_SPS (never assume people know this ).

What it does:

It adds the diffeence between the current and the previous sample to the signal, thus boosting high frequencies (mostly the top octave ie. 11-22kHz in case of CD/44.1kHz files) and causing slight distortion.

To quote the description of the original foobar plugin:

quote:
This started out as sort of a toy plugin containing DSPs for differentiation (input f(t), output f'(t)) and integration (input f(t), output F(t))

Recently a DSP for playback of f(t)+f'(t) has been added, in layman's terms this enhances treble / noise / transient content and can be seen as the audio equivalent of image sharpening filters.

(Integration isn't included in the sps preset, you can get f'(t) if you pull the source (=f(t)) slider to zero.)

You are not being anal. I completely forgot to mention the file should be extracted first.

So is it the same effect if you just increase the treble on the sound controls?

Hi, All --

Thanks very much for that info. I do know all about zip files and CTRL-P, etc. It's just that I know nothing about an SPS file and what this plugin would do. Now I know.

Thanks again, guys.

Take care.

No, if anything it's similar to boosting the highest band in the equalizer.
But like most 'enhancer' dsps it also creates additional waves (=distortion), which may help if your equipment doesn't reproduce these high end frequencies.
With good equipment, like all dsps, it does more harm than good.

(It is funny that the byproduct of a toy-plugin can cause such a hype, we'll see how long it lasts.)

Oh, in case anyone's interested: I played a little with the code and made two versions with extended options.

Slider 1 and 2 work the same as in 0.2, in 0.3-1 slider 3 and 4 add the second and third differential, in 0.3-2 they add the difference over 2 and 3 samples.

If someone wants to try them out and see if they're any use (I don't use dsps myself ):

Bleh, database is acting up again.

I don't think I'll resubmit them, this preset works (almost) the same if you pull the bass/treble slider all the way to treble and set boost to zero but has some additional options including normalizing/compression.
