This was on Tuesday, at 3PM, the first day of the storm:

The roads looked pretty good actually compared to the following morning.

You would have loved the winter of '77 then. It got down to -20F.

Today, the temperature keeps dropping. It was -4F at 4am, now at 6:30, it's -7F.

Upstate NY got hit with that big storm yesterday. We had a snow day for the first time in 10 years at my college. It was great fun except that I hardly did any work.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

The only thing thats coool right now, Billy Joel.

We passed the hash pipe....... we all go down together.

Had to get that out of the way before I started to hate on your weather. The upper east coast now has various messages saying their call center "is now closed because of EXTREME weather"

To finsh the song "we will all go down together"

Pretty sure not one person here gets that.

Uhoh. We wouldn't want that. I had a great time in the snow. It was more than I'd seen downstate since that 1996 storm.

Anyone want to have a picnic at my place? I promise it won't get too hot, and your beer will stay cool, even if you don't have a cooler!

(I had that table clean about a week or two ago, and now it's got almost 16 inches of snow on it.)

I tried going shopping, but it's kinda hard to find Giant Eagle when there's giant snow piles in the way.

Keeping the house warm takes some effort too.

But going out in the cold can be fun too. We tied some tubes together (reinforced with duct tape so the rope didn't rip them) and pulled them with 4-wheelers.

But sometimes the 4-wheelers alone couldn't go very far in the areas that haden't been driven yet. It took a few times making packed trails and getting them unstuck before we could get going fast.

Despite all this, my balls havnen't frozen off, yet. Anyone have a snowmobile they wanna sell me?

Illinois indeed has some great weather this week! Except all the snow is melting really, really fast making everything terribly muddy.

in before that's not mud

Woohoo Northern Wisconsin has some kick ass weather. 30-40+s. It sucks that its only going to last the week though. This weekend we're supposed to get either snow freezing rain or just rain. this sucks. Well i better enjoy this weather while i can.

Lots of rain came yesterday and last night, followed by warmer sun today, making tons of snow melt. Now the rivers and streams are running rapid and some of the roads are a lil flooded.

My students are complaining that the motorists are intentionally speeding through oversized puddles near the sidewalks they're walking on - meaning a lot of the kids are showing up to school drenched with salty/muddy water. It's horrible yet kinda funny at the same time. I guess I'm really lucky to have grown up where busses were needed to get me to and from school.

It's 2:04 a.m. I just got back from a rather long walk on the lakes with one of the dogs. The lakes all still frozen despite the rain, but the rain just took the snow off without taking away the ice, so it's basically like walking on wet pavement.

I didn't really accomplish anything; I didn't see anything I haven't seen before, and I didn't bring the camera along to take any interesting pictures, but somehow, those two hours were some of the best hours of my life.

Next year I will leave here to live somewhere where Renee and I will both get careers, not just me. I hope it's something like this, because having winter, woods and lakes is about the best damn place I could ever ask for.

Don't forget to live before you die.
