Updated 5.3 to 5.34.... Now Nothing

Started 5.3 (PRO) yesterday (no add-on's), and it told me to get the latest updates. I clicked OK, and it installed them.
Now winamp starts (at least I think it does) as task manager shows "Winamp 5.34" as running, and Processes shows Winamp 5.34 comsuming 98% of my CPU, and 11,312K of my memory, but nothing happens. I am not told to re-register, just nothing....not even a partial start up.
I going to do a "Clean Install", but my god (after reviewing your "you will be ignored page"), how much information do I have to provide to know I will get a responce if that does not work.
Is there somewhere I can go to get my 5.3 back, no I did not keep a copy of the file

Just Wondering:

As far as I know, you cannot get older versions.
I have Winamp Pro, also, and, it has not produced a single CD burn since I "upgraded" from 5.24 to 5.3, and then further versions. Since I can burn CDs using other software, it does not bother me, that much. But, it surely, would be nice if there is any communication with the people who took our money.

All previous versions of 5.3x Pro are still up on the nullsoft servers

eg.

http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp534_pro.exe
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp533_pro.exe
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp532_pro.exe
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp531_pro.exe
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...namp53_pro.exe

For pre 5.3x versions, you can install the plain Full version, and it will still be seen as a Pro registered version.

All versions are available at any of the following sites:
www.winampheaven.net
http://www.filehippo.com/download_winamp/
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winamp

Note, if downgrading to any version prior to 5.33 (ie. 5.32 or earlier) then you will need to nuke your media library database and reimport all your media again (because 5.33 and later use a unicode based database, whereas older versions were still ansi, and are therefore not compatible). You would probably be best doing a clean install.

All that said and done, we cannot reproduce CD Burning not working with 5.34 under any of Windows 2000, XP, or Vista (Win9x is no longer supported).

@ Mdwannabe

All being well, the clean install fixed your problem, but if not...

Try the following troubleshooter

Go to the Winamp program folder
Move PRIMOSDK.DLL out of the folder into some backup folder elsewhere.

Does Winamp load ok now?

Note, primosdk.dll is the file which loads the Sonic Burning Engine.
If it's not present, then the Sonic engine is not loaded at Winamp startup.

If the problem persists, put primosdk.dll back in the Winamp folder
(because basically, it means that it's not Sonic to blame).

If Winamp DOES load ok without primosdk.dll, then this means that there was a problem with installing the Sonic Engine when you upgraded, and I recommend that you close all programs, reinstall 5.34 Pro, then reboot before using Winamp.

If it's not Sonic / primosdk.dll to blame, the next step in the troubleshooter would be to temporarily disable the other ususal suspects.

Go to the Winamp\Plugins folder.

Repeat the above procedure for disabling all of the following, one at a time, opening & closing Winamp inbetween each one:

ml_pmp.dll
in_wm.dll
ml_xpdxs.dll

ml_xpdxs.dll is the MusicIP Mix plugin (fka: Predixis MusicMagic)

in_wm.dll is the Windows Media (WMA/WMV) support plugin

ml_pmp is the Portable Media Player device support plugin loader.

If Winamp loads after disabling ml_pmp.dll then it will probably be just one of the individual pmp_*.dll plugins to blame for your problem.

Place ml_pmp.dll back in the Winamp\Plugins folder

Remove all of the pmp_*.dll plugins

pmp_p4s.dll = PlaysForSure device support
pmp_activesync.dll = MS ActiveSync device support
pmp_ipod.dll = iPod support
pmp_usb.dll = generic usb player device support
pmp_njb.dll = Creative Nomad/Zen support

If Winamp opens ok, repeat the above troubleshooter sequence, placing one of the pmp plugins back in the Winamp\Plugins folder, closing & reopening Winamp inbetween, until the problem reoccurs.

Whichever plugin you restored last will be the guilty one.

If it's none of the default 1st-party plugins to blame, then this highly suggests that you've installed some extra 3rd-party plugins, any of which could be to blame for the problem.

Normally, we'd ask to see a List of Plugins, however, you won't be able to generate the list if Winamp doesn't load/open.

Remove any Input (in_*.dll), General Purpose (gen_*.dll), or Media Library (ml_*.dll) plugins which aren't referenced in this list of 1st-party plugins:

FYI:

Clean install, followed by a dirty install over that; has changed nothing. I'll try the above mentioned and see if that works. I have no installed plug-in's on my box.
I did have DFX installed, but uninstalled it before trying clean install of Winamp.
Think it could be hanging around in the windows registery causing a problem?

Thanks:
Rick

OK, PRIMOSDK.DLL seems to be the problem.

When removing it from "Winamp Program" folder I get to the register screen (but I input nothing not knowing what that would do).

But when doing a clean install and a re-boot after that; same problem, NO JOY.

NEXT?

Hmm... I'm really not sure.

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs

We would need to see the following 3 logs:

1. dxdiag log
2. HijackThis log
3. List of Plugins (my_plugins_list.txt)

See above link for details/instructions.

The logs might reveal something....

Windows OS, hardware (including CD drive(s) make/model), list of all startup & running processes, etc. By knowing more of this information, we might be able to determine the cause/solution. Without knowing this information, the problem would be virtually impossible to diagnose.

Does this file exist in 5.3 since it works on my box, if so could I copy it to the 5.4 folder?

Yes, primosdk.dll exists in 5.3, but the Sonic Engine is a different version in 5.3x and 5.34, and therefore it won't work.

primosdk.dll isn't the actual Sonic Engine, it just loads the Sonic Engine.

Maybe you unchecked Sonic Ripping/Burning Support in the installer options?
If you did then this will mean that you're trying to use an old incompatibe version of Sonic with 5.34, which will definitely cause problems.

Basically, we will need to see those logs...

OK:
I respectfully offer the attached file which contains the dxdiag, and the hijack logs, but I am not sure how to provide the My_plugins_list log since Winamp will not even start. All I can say is there are no plugin's installed over and above what came with the Winamp update file.
I appreciate your time and effort, just let me know what to do next.

Thanks:
Rick

Try disabling the following Startup items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Creative Detector] "C:\Program Files\Creative\MediaSource\Detector\CTDetect.exe" /R

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Creative MediaSource Go] "C:\Program Files\Creative\MediaSource5\Go\CTCMSGoU.exe" /SCB

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe

O23 - Service: Creative Service for CDROM Access - Creative Technology Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe

I recommend that you do it in the following order:

Close all programs

Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administartive Tools > Services
Scroll down for and hi-lite: Creative Service for CDROM Access
Click 'Stop the service' in the left pane, and wait for Windows to stop it.
Now right-click the same entry and select 'Properties'
Change the 'Startup Type' to 'Manual' via the drop-down menu (instead of 'Automatic')
Click Apply/OK

Close Services

Go to: Start > Run
Type: msconfig
Click 'OK'

Go to the Startup tab

Uncheck all of:
Creative Detector
Creative MediaSource Go
NeroFilterCheck

Click Apply/OK

Reboot when prompted

Now try running Winamp again.

Any joy?

JOY!
But what did I do?; and what do I do to turn off windows warning after re-boot?
Just wondering, and yes Winamp shows most recient version running, though I was still not asked to re-register.
Am I safe re-installing my version of DFX?

Just Wondering:

Yes, Creative Burner should still work ok if started up manually.

But that's the problem you'll sometimes get if you have something loading at Startup which takes over the CD drives... ie. it makes it so nothing else can access the drives.

Re: Windows warning
As far as I know, there should be a 'Do not show this again' type of option you can checkmark in the msconfig reminder dialog.
