Replay Gain in Winamp?

Hola,

I play a lot of music at work, and as we all know, every CD is mastered differently with different volumes. Being that I work in a fairly quiet environment, it's important to me to be able to normalize the volume of the music I'm playing. Is there a setting, or maybe a plugin that can do this? Here's a better description of what I'm talking about, thanks.

Winamp supports replay gain, has for a while now.

Right click on a file Send To > Replay Gain Scanner

Check the preferences to turn it on (Winamp > Prefs > Playback).

And this doesn't change the file permanently, right? Just adjusts the sound while it's playing back?

Winamp writes the ReplayGain info to the file tags (for mp3, wma, ogg, flac, m4a, aac files), so that Winamp and any other app/player which supports RG can read it.

If you're not happy, you can remove the tags, and the RG info will also be removed.

Different amplification modes

I tried searching Winamp's Help for a detailed description of the different Replay Gain amplification mode options, to no avail...

Where can I find a description of these options, and the way they're supposed to work when the preferred source is "Album" or "Track"?

And what about the "Dither" option, what's that for?

I'm using Winamp 5.35 on Windows XP

Try Wikipedia for dither. Dither will reduce overtones created by the sample size change. Album will the album sound comparable to other albums by applying gain to 89 dB. Track will make every track sound the same, applying gain to 89 dB.

To get noticed, it helps to start a new thread instead of adding to the end of an already existing one.

There is a bit of information about the RG modes in the Help File
http://www.winamp.com/support/help/...eneral_playback

"Apply Gain / Prevent Clipping" is the recommended setting ("This will level out the volume and prevent distortion").
You shouldn't really ever need to select anything else.

If the scanned files are albums, then always select 'Save as Album'.
The Album rg value is a constant for each separate album,
whereas Track mode values can vary slightly.
I prefer to use Album mode for that reason alone, so the whole Album will play at the same volume level.

If you require more info, then this is always a good starting place:

Re: Dither
Dither is currently only used for OGG and FLAC formats

More Info here
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=258414
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dither

Personally, I prefer to disable it, heh.
