Streaming via ssl

is winamp 5.5 unable to stream mp3 content via https?

When i try to stream (unprotected) mp3 via the secure portion of an online usenet music source, it won't play. If i try the same files from the non-secure portion of the site, the files stream fine.

Is there a way to overcome this?

Thanks!

Well let's see now...
Winamp uses the IE engine. So try adding the https://URL(s) to trusted sites via Internet Explorer > Internet Options > Security tab > Trusted sites > Sites button > Add the https://URL(s) website to the zone

Make certain that both Winamp and/or the IE browser are then shut down. Reopen Winamp. See whether or not you are able to stream content via https now that you've added the site (or sites) as trusted sites.

Worth a shot anyway. Let me know how it goes.

Addendum:

I forgot to mention that you should also UNcheck "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"

I am experiencing the same issue: streaming works fine over HTTP, no dice with HTTPS hitting the same server. I just tried the IE "Trusted Sites" solution to no avail. This is all with WinAmp 5.52.

Also did a little searching back over the forums, and found this from back in June 2007:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....hreadid=273675

Per the suggestion of the original poster, I tried changing the extension on the file from mp3 to mpg. Now access over HTTPS works fine. I would rather not pursue his mod_rewrite hack, and it doesn't appear that 5.34beta (with the SSL-enabled jnetlib.w5s) is available anymore.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Installer for jnetlib.w5s ssl version
http://www.meggamusic.co.uk/winamp/jnetlib_ssl.exe

Notes:

Auto detects Winamp install dir, and extracts jnetlib.w5s to Winamp\System

You may want to backup the current (non-ssl) version of jnetlib.w5s first,
as this installer will overwrite it without any prompt
(make sure Winamp is closed first before running the installer).

Please also note that the reason why we don't distribute it with Winamp is because it blindly accepts all certificates, without checking for validation/authenticity.

What does that matter? When streaming from normal HTTP it doesn't check anything. When you stream from HTTPS why would it be any different? I do not understand why it should check any certificate or not and what the problem is with accepting bad certificates. It's not less secure because HTTPS is already flawed by design, and this lack of feature is a major drawback of Winamp.
