The Known Workaround link from the quote points to KatMouse, so you are right about it being the suggested alternative.

AFAIK, there is not a plug-in to give Winamp full smart wheel support. If there was we would gladly point that out as we did with Katmouse. Also, as the wish list item indicates, there is not a Winamp option for that also.

I understand your reluctance to install an application just for that purpose. I have it on my system. It is unobtrusive and works quietly in the background. You can set it to ignore applications, if you don't want it to work with some.

At first I was hesitant and now if it is accidentally disabled it, I almost miss Katmouse's usefulness immediately.
