When I play shoutcast servers and then press stop or click exit, it comes up with an error message

Troubleshooters:

Remove/disable any 3rd party plugins, particularly General Purpose ones
(C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\gen_*.dll)
Make sure Winamp is closed first.

Winamp Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> DSP/FX : select None

Prefs -> Output -> Select "WaveOut"
or try "DirectSound" (you may need to update DirectX for this)

Prefs -> Agent: Uncheck all 3 options

Prefs-> Display: uncheck everything (keeping "numbers in playlist" is ok)

Prefs -> Options: Process Priority Class = Normal

Prefs -> Plugins: Plugin Priority = Normal
Uncheck: Auto execute vis plugin on play

Prefs -> Setup: Uncheck the 2 options at the bottom

Prefs -> Input -> MPEG Audio Decoder -> config -> General tab:
Change "decode thread priority" to normal or higher setting (default=highest)

If the problem persists:
Uninstall -> Reinstall procedure:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=50818

Still happening?
Close down any background/systray programs to see if they're interfering?
Run: ScanDisk; Disk Defrag; Virus Checker
Make sure you've got the latest drivers for soundcard & videocard
(details of which you didn't include in your sys specs!)

[edit]

Update:
WA2.78 users, try this patch:
Winamp 2.78 Update

Please check this thread for further details.

This is probably a dumb question that I should know the answer to, but how do I distinguish the 3rd party plugins?

delete any gen_*.dll or dsp_*.dll plugin files

but you should know what they are because you would have had to download and install them separately.

I have encountered a similar problem with my Winamp 5.1 installation. Isolved it by going to Preferences -> General Preferences -> Video and de-selecting "Allow Hardware Video Overlay".

This overlay may be interfering with something I've installed, or possibly with a function in my Mad Dog video driver.

I hope this helps.....

It certainly won't help anyone who's posted in this thread, seeing as it was 4 years ago, and at a time when Winamp didn't even support video :/
