I've noticed fairly frequent Newbie posts about how to use CDDB. Shouldn't there be a Greatest Hit entry for this?

I'll volunteer to generate a writeup if some moderator will agree to edit it and get it posted.

I know there'a a CDDB reference under Radioactive Man's thread - Useful links to previously asked questions - but there are a lot of links listed there and it's kinda hard to find a specific CDDB thread.

Create A CD Playlist With CDDB

When Winamp is used to play a CD, unless some special action is taken, the playlist will not show Artist or Song information. You will just see "Track 1, Track 2", etc.

A widely used feature, called CDDB, can be initiated that will automatically find and display actual Artist/Track information in the Winamp Playlist. CDDB stands for CD Data Base. It refers to a website that maintains a data base of 100's of thousands of CD/Track information files. This site can be accessed through Winamp, and prompted to pass the proper data for display in the Playlist panel.

FOR THIS ACTION TO OCCUR, YOUR PC MUST BE ONLINE.

To set up for it in Winamp, perform the following:
1-Open the Options window. You can click on the small symbol in the upper left of the Main panel. Or, alternatively, click on any empty area of the Main panel (to select it), then press Ctrl+P on the keyboard.
2-Click on Input (under plugins), and click on Nullsoft CD/Linein Plugin to highlight it.
3-Click on the Configure button.
4-Make sure that Use CDDB is checked.
5-The CDDB Server address should be us.cddb.com:8880. If you want to change this, it can only be done via the Change button. You can then select from a list of server address selections.
6-The email address should be winampuser@nullsoft.com.
7-Click OK, and you're finished with the setup. It shouldn't have to be done again.

Now, when you insert a CD for the first time, Winamp will automatically make the internet connection to the CDDB site, and the needed CD info will be sent to your PC. When the CDDB connection is made, you should temporarily see a small popup window indicating that CDDB is activated, and a "success" notification if your CD info is found.

The first time this is done, the track info in the Winamp playlist panel might still show only the "Track 1, Track 2", etc. list. But as each track is played, the real info will appear.

This playlist info is saved automatically in a Windows file. When you replay the same CD this saved track info will display in the playlist (without having to be online and connected to CDDB).

Be aware that when a CD is set up to start playing any playlist that is currently being displayed will be replaced by the CD playlist.

Hey, that thread you referred to above from the TSGH forum was my creation, not RM's. He just copied it from Tech_Gen.

Tho' if Videocrew wants to post a new thread in TSGH then that's cool too. The more paths to help the n00bs better, I suppose.

btw, shouldn't the CDDB address be cddb.cddb.com ?

I've looked very carefully. The entry that I see is us.cddb.com:8880. I'm set that way, and CDDB works fine for me. The other servers listed in the alternate selection window have additional prefixes, such as sc.ca.us.cddb.com:8880 - but none of them show the cddb.cddb.com address. I know it used to be like that, but CDDB seems to change it every now and then.

Didn't mean to slight you in the reference to the thread - I hadn't seen your original post.

regarding the server info... cddb wasn't working for me with the cddb.cddb one... so i tried us.cddb and it worked... so just my two cents

OK, so I've read the stuff i already know. It says the CDDB info is saved to a windows file, but what is the file name and where's it located? cos I can't find it anywhere, and I want to back it up!

Woah... Blast from the Past


The local CDDB file is usually CDPlayer.ini in the windows directory.

The best way to do it, though, is through the CDDB servers, which is always up to date and complete, as long as there aren't those manbitches that put the wrong entries in

Freedb's iso full of db entries is cool, although after the first one it no longer fits on a standard cd

Someone actually used the search function

guess agian, I checked the cdplayer.ini and it does'nt appear to be holding my CDDB

I would use CDDB to reload my CD track list after a HDD format, but there's so many CDs I'd be there days. Plus I edited them and wrote in some of my own, so I really need to find the file that contains the database on my HDD

Any more ideas?

Windows CD Player cddb file (cdplayer.ini) is only used for storing cddb info if you've replaced Winamp's default cd plugin (in_cdda.dll) with URL submitted by user., otherwise in_cdda.dll stores the info in in_cdda.cdb in the winamp\plugins dir.

Try doing a search for files that are named ##to## where ## is hex i.e. 00to00 up to fftoff (they will have no extension)

These are windows CDDB files that are created for windows as FAT32 cannot hold more than a certain number of files in each directory (nowhere near enough to hold 1 file for each CD). It basically combines groups of the unix files into one larger file.

If you find a file like this open it in notepad and it will probably contain clear text with details of your CD's
