Almost. I was talking about the artist & title (etc.) information for audio files. For MP3s it is commonly referred as ID3 info. Than is the information you see in the view File Info box.
The 70's smart view, uses the Year field from the ID3 or metadata. If there is no year in the metadata, the media file won't show up in 60's, 70's 80's (and so on) views.
As for the error message you get after clicking the Auto-Tag button. Try reinstalling Winamp. In the Choose Components section (window/page 4) of the Windows installer, make sure 'CDDB for recognizing CDs' (in the Multimedia Engine branch) and 'Auto_Tagger' (in the Winamp Library branch) are check-marked. You may need to click the plug sign + next to Multimedia Engine and Winamp Library to expand the options branch.
