I'm very happy with the new Winamp, but I have a problem

When I try to open Mp3's from the internet they do not open directly but a message appears saying that I should first download them and then play them. I'm sure that there's some way to play them directly without having to download first, when you are trying to hear some band's mp3 samples you don't want to download 100 little 30 second mp3's to your desktop you know.

I hope you guys can help me out!!

Happy Holidays!

Hmmm I'm I crazy or the new Winamp make mp3's sound better??. I dnloaded the new version today but b4 I had the 2.80 and when using my Audio Techinca headphones the low end would sound very distorted and not very loud. Now with the new version nothing sounds distorted and the music sounds much louder.

I'm I imagining things or something drastically changed?

As far as your first post is concerned...

If you are using IE6+ browser, and you do NOT have 3rd party download software (eg: GetRight), and you have your browser preferences set correctly, then you SHOULD be given an OPTION as to whether you should OPEN or SAVE the mp3 file from the internet. You are looking to OPEN it, according to your first post. See my attached screenshot (save-mp3.gif). That is what you should see UNLESS at some point you mistakingly went ahead and UNCHECKED the "Always ask before opening this type of file" checkbox. If you had unchecked it at the time you selected SAVE (download), and if you do NOT receive the same download prompt as is seen in my screenshot, then you need to reset your browser preferences so that you are PROMPTED (like in the screenshot) again for what you want to do when clicking on an .mp3 internet link.

If you have trouble resetting your security preferences, then do this:

CTRL Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Internet Explorer
Choose REPAIR

That may bring back the defaults for you.

* Note: The "Always ask before opening this type of file" checkbox is not available for some file types, such as files with the extensions .exe or .com, which run programs or commands. When this check box is not available, you will always be asked before opening this type of file.

As far as your second post is concerned...

From Winamp3 FAQ

Does Winamp3 sound better then Winamp 2.X?
NO. It is the exact same decoder used in Winamp 2.X. Any differences are all in your head. See this.

Thanks my friend, I'll pass to explain you. I do get the window asking me if I want to open or save, so when I press open I get the progress bar and when it finish instead of directly opening I get a message that says that there's some sort of problem and that I should first download it to my hard drive and play it when downloaded.

Well needless to say it works that way, but there's many times I don't want to save mp3's in my hard drive but make them open directly. I could do this with the 2.80 ver, but now I can't!

What do you think?

BYe!

Ok. This appears to have nothing to do with Winamp but rather appears to be a browser/download issue.

Alternatively:

Try Opera browser
Try Netscape browser

And see if either of those other 2 browsers give you any problems on the download. If they DO NOT, and you want to continue using Internet Explorer as your default browser, again I suggest:

Close all open browsers
CTRL Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Internet Explorer
Choose REPAIR

Try emptying the internet cache
Close browser, go to:
Internet Control Panel -> General tab -> Temporary Internet Files -> Delete

You can open mp3/pls/m3u streams directly in Winamp by copying the url (rt click -> copy shortcut) and pasting it (Ctrl+V) into Winamp's Open/Add location box (Playlist -> "Add" button -> location). This way there's no need to download anything to the hard drive.

I use netscape 7.01 guys. And the message is not from the browser but from the Winamp.

For real...

Also I cannot open for example mp3 files that I have in my desktop or in any other place directly, they do not open. I have to open them using the open button in the Winamp. This is not really bad as you know, but is another weird thing...

Thanks btw

Okay, so it sounds like your file associations are screwed up or something.

Go to: Winamp -> Preferences -> Media
Checkmark "register types on Winamp start"
Click the select "None" button
This will unassociate all file extensions from Winamp3.
Close Prefs, close Winamp, restart Winamp.
Go back to Prefs -> Media
Now select the file extensions from the list that you want WA3 to be the default player of, eg. I recommend: MP3, M3U, PLS, and any others of your choice, etc.
WAL must be selected (the first item in the list) as these are Winamp3 skins.
I also recommend you select:
BPL and B4S (wa3 playlists) and NSV (Nullsoft Streaming Video)
Again, now close & restart Winamp

I don't use Netscrape, so I don't know the instructions for emptying the internet cache, but if you do then I suggest you give it a try.

If the problems persist, then tell us what your Windows OS is and we'll try to fix the associations for you manually. Also tell us what other players are installed, eg. WMP7+, RealPlayer, MMJB, QuickTime 5+, etc, and whether any of these are concurrently running (eg. RealPlayer system tray icon).

Well actually, PLS and M3U are the standard/universal streaming playlist formats, so did you select those as well? Apart from that, maybe give me some url's so I can see for myself exactly what streaming file extension(s) we're talking about.

eg.
.pls is used by shoutcast.com
.m3u is used by mp3.com

Also, if you could expand as much as possible on the term "doesn't work" . . .

I was trying with mp3.com. But anyways this is not a HUGE problem, if you think you can help of course, is better.

I have the .pls and .mp3u highlighted on the preferences/media thingy.

Actually I have highlighted from .wal to .mp3 and then a big space untill .mpg, from .mpg I have highlighted untill .nsv.

So there's a big space without highlighting on the middle

ok, then it seems to be a problem with your Netscrape config.
Maybe try Internet Explorer just to see if it works ok.

Like I said, I don't use Netscrape, but as far as I know, you need to setup the correct associations & command lines c/o
Netscape -> Edit menu -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Applications

The following MIME Types:
audio/m3u
audio/mpegurl
audio/x-mpegurl
audio/scpls
audio/x-scpls
all need to be configured to open with Winamp3

The command line being:
"C:\Program Files\Winamp3\Studio.exe" "%1"

Don't ask me how it's done though.
You're the Netscape user, not me, so it's up to you to work it out.
