Internet Radio Station - Need a little help from our online buddies!

Hello everyone.

Very soon we are hoping to launch our own internet commercial radio station. Now this station has been planned and constructed since JUNE 2001!!!!!!! We are now ready to launch in March 2003! The trouble is i've left all the important things until last!

I have a few Q's, if anyone can help please reply!

1) If I have a 1 mbps broadband connection I can run my own server, and broadcast at 128kbps?

2) The computer that will be producing the music (ie: Otsjuke), the program similar to Winamp, it will be running on a computer network. Trouble is the computer that is broadcasting, is a guest on the network. Can I set the DNA's server on the Host, broadcast from the guest to the host then to the net?

3) Do we have to pay for a commercial license on Shoutcast? I've heard before we do, but can't seem to find any info now!

4) Do we have to pay loyalty fee's? Can't find any info on that either!

5) Also, whats the MAXIMUM MAXIMUM MAXIMUM amount of listeners we could have??? We've got plenty of bandwdith, plenty of RAM, plenty of HDD space, plenty of processor power!!!

Any help with any of the above questions would be great, even if its just guidance. We have tried to contact Shoutcast direct, but no links, no email links, no telephone numbers!! Its a bit shambolic really isn't it! But thats life!

So thanks to anyone who can help! We hope you will all tune in as soon as the station is up and running! Take Care for Now everybody!

Danny

1 & 5.
Check out the Sticky post titled:
SHOUTcast: Important Info & Answers to FAQs. READ ME!

Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled:
1. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> DSLReports Bandwidth tester(Only be concerned with the UPLOAD bandwidth)
2. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> CasterClub's Listener Calculator
3. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> CasterClub's Bandwidth Calculator

Use 1 to find your upload.
Use 2 to determine the number of listeners you can support at your selected streaming bitrate.

2.
What is a network guest?
If it's another machine on the lan, connect your source to the DNAS using the DNAS lan ip.
If it's a machine outside the network, then connect (might need to port forward) your source to the DNAS using the real, world-visible ip.

3.
No, you get a revocable, no-charge license.

4.
Yes. See http://www.riaa.org or http://www.soundexchange.com or http://www.copyright.gov/carp/webcasting_rates.html or search the forums using keywords such as 'carp', 'licensing', 'fees', 'riaa', etc.

Station

Thanks for the rapid reply!

Great help!

Could you just explain Answer 2 though in general terms.

I'm brilliant at CPU's, its just Networking! I've NEVER concentrated on networking in my life, i've set the home network up myself, but the DNA's, I.P's, routing etc. is just complete blah blah! I could get the jjist of it very easy, just a little more plain english and I would be superman on it!

Thats if you can!

Thanks Alot Danny

Actually, I dont even bother with stuff like the license fees or loyaltee fee's. I just play the music and hope I dont get hit by anyone like the RIAA. which I bet I never will. my station is small enough, there isnt any possible way forthem to find me unless they search through every nook and cranny of the net!

Good Point

Thats a good point!

I would do the same in your shoes!

But you have to remember, I have a company name to uphold!
A reputation.

but I would do exaclty that if I didn't have the company!

with a 1mbit connection you could safely handle about 7 listeners at 128kbps.

At 24k, you'll get 37 listeners.

Use the bandwidth calculator above to check it out.
Make sure you verify your upload speed first: http://www.dslreports.com/stest
