Believe me, I've know, lol. It's just purely insane what the hell they are trying to do now. I've know about palladium for about 6 months now, and I've been doing some heavy research. They are crazy fools if they think pc users are going to fall for this. I've been looking for a good excuse to turn to mac.

Sure - unless your system administrator configures your machine in such a way that TCPA is mandatory, you can always turn it off. You can then run your PC with administrator privileges, and use insecure applications.

I wish you were right, but I think consumer loyalty is about to be put to the ultimate test. I for one am not going to even bother with working around it, I'll just move to a better os anyways, linux is 100% better than windows, and probably more supported after all this is over.

It's a simple tactic and it has been used to prevent certain CD Protection technologies from hitting the marketplace.AND IT WORKS

Just return the computer

I know it sounds retarded but think for a moment. Palladium comes out and people buy it. people try to burn their pirated CD's and cannot do that. The people then return it to where they got it and accuse the store of selling them crap. The store turns to the computer builder vendor and accuses them of selling the store X amount of units that are crap. The vendor then gives the store the speech about palladium and the store is still angry. The store and the vendor then take it out of microsoft and the huge retailers somewhat set-up a boycott with the huge computer makers. Microsoft breaks down because if they keep palladium in their systems, then they loose the trust of the vendors and the computer manufacturers. Thus palladium is wiped off the normal retail market within 4 to 6 months.

Faster if you can get the third party hardware makers angry because their stuff will most likely be not compatible with palladium or vise versa. That will be 4-5 months. Much quicker

Boy do I feel old. When I graduated from school the only computer we had was the one they used to keep track of attendence and grades. There were no "windows", the only reason Gates had money was his family was rich and the IBM desktop was still being developed.

I dont hate Microsoft. On the contrary Im a fierce supporter of win OS right to the heart of the graphics field (which is known to be more Mac favored). But some practices are way bold and irritating.

PC's were around before Microsack decided to get their grubby hands on DOS. Microsoft may have made them more popular, but other computer systems were already gaining popularity. Gates built the company by stabbing other companies in the back and/or stealing technology and ideas from other companies. Most people on this board were still in diapers when I was programming BASIC on a TRS-80. It was Windows that made the PC a household item. Those of us who were already hardcore users of DOS and other operating systems looked upon Windows as the plague and despised it as a lazy person's way of using a computer. Windows eventually won over and now the internet is full of computer illiterate users who still run that executeable e-mail attachment after being burned many times before. What's my point? My point is you should count your lucky stars you have Winblows and other GUI operating systems. Otherwise, you'd probably still be one of those people who don't use computers. Back then you had to know something and it took some learning to use a computer. Nowadays it's just point and click. I'm still amazed at how many people find Windows complicated. Oh how I long for the BBS days, 2400 baud and message boards.

I have this dyslexia problem with my hands when i type. I don't know why, but i switch letters around all the time. I had to correct this very post about (literally) 7 times. Make that 8.

Yes, there are still BBS's online through TelNet... but it just isn't the same as it used to be. I used to run VBBS for my BBS (after trying many other BBS software packages). We had message boards for all kinds of subjects. My BBS would dial up to a hub and transfer messages every morning. It was great fun and the sense of community was awesome. I still have my BBS backed up somewhere. It's just as I left it those many years ago when I shut it down. If I remember right the last day was sometime in 1994. Those were the days.

I hate to say this but you were in diapers when I was programming FORTRAN for R&D projects on an IBM mainframe.

It was Windows that made the PC a household item. Those of us who were already hardcore users of DOS and other operating systems looked upon Windows as the plague and despised it as a lazy person's way of using a computer. ........Back then you had to know something and it took some learning to use a computer.

I also used UNIX systems and windowing systems on workstations long before Apple and Microsoft had their first day of business. So neither company invented windows. DOS was a scaled down command line interface quite inferior to UNIX that any simpleton could easily learn to use. You would have to be retarded to continue being a "hardcore" DOS typer when you can efficiently (not lazily) point and click to solve your problems using windows applications.

Retail is a really powerful sector in influencing people's opinions on certain issues such as technology. Most retailers especially my employer (check avatar) are really customer focused and we have to suck-up to them in order for my employer and our competitiors to make a buck. It's simple, if the customer is unhappy, then so are the retailers and they take their anger out on microsoft and in this case the big computer manufacturers for actually going along with this shitty idea. People and investors knock off retailers for being centralized and very aggressive when it comes to customer interaction. This is our greatest strengh. Just like the music industry and TV, retailers also have a hand in preceiving what's hype and what's not.

And Bill Gates, Hell, i'll fly over to his place and shove that god damn $20 if he doesn't do it soon.

nah, its not realy a big deal, its just (now this sounds like i brad, but i not, its true, so w/e) my brain is extremely fast, in the snece that it processes and sends things much faster than i can physical keep up with. When i was little i had a bad stuttering problem. It wasn't that i'd be like h-h-h-h-i, i'd say a word over and over again (about 8 times). Even now that i am older when i get excited or worked out about something i stil do it, but it s not bad. I attribute my bad typing to that same effect. My brain says type this much faster than my finger can go. I am a pretty good typist when i want to be but the backspace key has only the arrow, b, and "ace" left on it . I know when i make mistakes, just here in the forums, most the time litle thigns go unnoticed (teh instead of the) so i don't try to correct as much. It's when i make those big error like u pointed out when the ttouble is . Now, I don't tell y'all this cause i want you to be liek "oh im sorry, i won't ever make a spelling correction on you again" and i don't want sympathy (idk if any of you even care, lol) but its just the reason why. Well, now that you all know far more about me then you ever cared to know ().

Little advice, find an old commodore 64,or sinclai spectrum, learn that, then move through the earler systems and you should very quickly work out how easy it is and where the silly backdoors windows love to incorparate for there govt. buddys so much.
Oh and learn your dos and bios as well!

Are you done with trying to inflate your ego? You might be older than me, but your ego trip puts you about 20 years younger. I guess that makes you unique, doesn't it?

The point I was trying to make was the fact that most people were LAZY back then and didn't want to learn how to type commands into a computer. Nowadays it's the same with Windows, even though it's easier to use.

As for programming languages and operating systems designed for business... those have no relevance. I was speaking of DOS and other operating systems pertaining to personal computers, not mainframes. The average personal computer of then didn't come equipped with Unix or Fortran did it? I rest my case.

DOS was what I needed for what I was into at the time. Gaming, programming, the demo scene, the MOD scene and BBSing. Windows 3.1 couldn't cut it. When Windows 95 came out I was skeptical--especially since most DOS-based games wouldn't work correctly. I tried the alternative--OS/2, but eventually I ended up with Windows 95. Yes, it's nice to have convenience, but for convenience you sacrifice control. DOS was simple, yes, but it was functional and everything you needed for a personal computer. I can't imagine using Unix back then for games or demos. MOD's maybe, if someone had written a player.

Ah yes... the famous loop! I loved that thing. I used to go around in the stores and start one up. Back then it was when Commodores, Vic 20's and TI's were on display. What fun! I agree. The older systems are such great fun to play around with. I still have an old CoCo and a complete PCJr. I just threw away a mint condition Kaypro because I had no room for it. *sigh* I hated to get rid of it, but I have enough old junk as it is. Wish I had a Sinclair though... that'd be worth a few bucks.

I always loved looping different things, even in DOS.
In class we used to have this DOS batch that would copy files and then delete them, Writing things like
Deleting registry....
Deleting......
and then printing things at high speed.
so the hard drive would make noise and freak the hell out of whos computer it was. It didn't actually damage anything (actually, it removed Command and Conquer's executable if there was one). We used it once on this kid that would get the whole class in trouble for playing one particular game (guess) during class. But I'll never forget that batch. Whoo man the heart attacks we caused. We never really considered it, but we could have renamed the windows file to a bunch of random symbols, but we were only small assholes, not real ones.
