Winamp 2.90 BETA -2- here

http://nullsoft.com/cookie/

Current known issues:
* The Vorbis tag updating through the media library may be buggy, please test.
* the minibrowser page says "upgrade". =)
* running a fullscreen visualization plugin when playing video (or vice versa) can be bad
(i.e. cause Winamp to quit). This appears to be a directdraw issue, we'll figure out why.
* new extended skin format may change for 2.90, so don't distribute new skins too widely.
* some AVI/MPEG/ASF/etc videos may be flipped, due to directshow weirdness. We will work to correct this as
much as possible.
* Some MPEG2 video decompressors (latest PowerDVD one apparently) may have issues with playback.
* Many more configuration options and fixes should be added in the 2.90 to 2.9x land. Enjoy.

What's new from beta 1:
(small fixes since 2.9 beta, but useful nonetheless)
* fixed ml_ plugin support
* changed video popup menu to remove Ctrl+ on 1 2 ` stuff
* fixed multi monitor support for video
* fixed some ml vfs bugs, made writeout nearly atomic, optimized.
* fixed ml import current playlist bug (needed a savequerytree())
* made in_nmp3 not use builtin EQ if used in DLL mode
* fixed end of file skipping bug on CD tracks
* made CD digital extraction off by default
* made video window sizes to remain when switching video modes
* fixed some video OSD stuff
* added mms:// and mmst:// and mmsu:// url style support to in_dshow
* added nsv prefs, streaming buffer size
* in_nsv includes nsvtag as well as media library setting ability.
* made winampmenu in embedwnd initialize submenus =)
* fixed crash in internet radio/tv on dblclick when refreshing
* updated in_vorbis to v1.31
* made in_vorbis support extended metadata setting/getting
* updated in_mod to v2.2.10 beta 29

What's new from 2.81:
* added integrated full featured video support (NSV and DirectShow (AVI,ASf,MPEG,etc))
* added library (complete with media database, shoutcast listing, playlist editing, CD listing, mass tag editting, plugin API for portable devices, and more!)
* updated Winamp's window docking code to be more robust/extensible
- made AVS dock use this new API
* updated PCM equalizer with code from 4Front Technologies/George Yohng. Quality is a lot better.
* updated equalizer default skin to show the true +12db/-12db range (the 20db was a veeery old typo)
* a ton of new WM_WA_IPC API calls.
- general purpose plugin window support
- extended metadata system for getting more than just title/length of items.
- lots of exposed features via IPC
* updated to PP's latest input and output plugins
* focus/Z order change on window close related bugfixes
* added track numbers and song lengths in HTML generated playlists
* removed all ATL code, shoved EXE size by 20kb
* added digital audio extraction in in_cdda.dll
(needs WNASPI32.DLL under Windows 9x/ME)
* added Alt+M shortcut for minimizing Winamp
* added Ctrl+(Keypad +)/Ctrl+(Keypad -) shortcuts in playlist editor for changing font size
* fixed stop after current menu item trash related bug
* added ultravox support for in_mp3
* made in_mp3 not display 'unknown X' for empty id3 tags
* fixed & error in tooltips in winamp and winampa's systray icons
* and more!
* new SDKs will be posted soon.

Cool beans!

Do we know how many BETA's there will be before the proper release?

Wow Nullsoft crew just rocks... Thanks alot, really. I think I jizzed at least twice this weekend so far. heheheh... Really though, I think I might just do it again. The new eq is legit. Its one of the best programmed software eqs ive worked with (although not tested for quality yet).

Anywho, I worked up this preset, hardley tested, but after 30 mins it looked pretty flat on my $h4t. Hopefully the forums actually attach the eqf. I know its not really a true multiband, but its close imo. basically a 10band (very) intelligent slammer/limiter... Would you happen to have a link to the developers site?

Anywho, cheers Nullsoft ^_^ v

[e]i updated it, turned it up a few db, still sounds ok[/e]
[finale]now it doesnt have quite as 'barky' midrange, this is proof of concept anyways, tweak and have fun[/finale]

A quick note on Ogg support. Adding Ogg files seems to be OK now, however, selecting files and sending them to a playlist, doesn't take into account the display options. The Import option does, though.

Dig the ogg full file buffering. Is that new?

Slightly OT, is there a way to play DVD's through the video support? Or, will this become available later? I'm currently using PowerDVD, but I find the inteface a tad annoying.

No need to uninstall. This isn't Winamp3, heyhey.

Can everyone who reported beta_1 bugs in the other thread please confirm whether they're fixed or not now (truncated cd trax, ogg, multi-monitor, etc)

btw, I still can't get it to play that Big Brother Norway stream
mmst://217.13.4.182/stream.bb.broadpark.no/dc1_high/

in_dshow is recognizing it now, but it still gets stuck in an endless buffer loop...

It would be nice to be able to do things like this with the MPEG input plugin that you can currently only do with the ogg plugin:

[$num(%tracknumber%,2) - ]$if(%artist%,%artist% - ,Unknown Artist - )[%album% - ]$if(%title%,%title%,%filename%)

So you get displayed a zero padded track number, the atrist name if there, otherwise 'Unknown artist'. Then the album name if it's there and then the track name if it's there.

I know I've been after that feature for aaaages.

One thing which is really pissing me off, and I think it was mentioned before. If you double click an item in one of your playlists in the ML, it loads a new playlist containing only that song/vid. It'd be better if it did this:

Check if double clicked song/vid is in current playlist. If yes, keep same playlist in PL but jump to that song. If not, load the playlist in which the song you double clicked resides and then play the song.

skinme! perfect idea, and a checkbox to select the double-click mode each human likes best.

DJEgg, try the attached playlist, does it work for you? it doesn't work for me, although i had to force my real wmplayer9 to be http only to get it to work.

it is wma8 codec, is that the issue?

No, I can't get your stream to work either.
mms://radioio.wm.llnwd.net/radioio-hi/ (this works ok in WMP8)

mms://radioio.wm.llnwd.net/radioio-hi/.wma
This probably just confuses Winamp into thinking 'do I use in_wm or in_dshow' ?!

@skinme
Yes, WA3-style multiple playlist support would be nice, but I don't think it's gonna happen with WA2.x
At the moment, either "right click -> enqueue" ML entries, or make "enqueue" the default action in: Prefs -> Library
Best thing to do is save your main playlist (and any others) under "Playlists" in ML, then just "right click -> play" to reload into Playlist window ?!?!

@wheeljack
cool
yay!

One more thing: the skinning engine sucks. What's the point of having variable width fonts if they can't be variable height too. Most fonts look shitty at 7px high. Couldn't you have variable height with a max height of say 15px (since the titlebars are 20px high)?

DJEgg: that's no use. It just adds the song to the end of the Playlist. It's already in the playlist. I just want it to play and but retain the playlist. If it doesn't do this, I really don't see any point in having the ML.

Never mind that, I'm still trying to work out what in_nmp3 is!
Must be a typo, I guess.

1) in_mp3.dll has a built in EQ (fast layer)
Prefs -> Input -> MPEG Audio Decoder -> config -> decoder tab

...if used in DLL mode.
Hmm, I guess it means if used externally, eg. by CDex and other software which support Winamp plugins . . . not sure though . . . (slap me!)

2) Ogg title display is fixed

New features is all nice and dandy, however this is *not* what I expected of a new version.
One word:

UNICODE

This is the only thing that stopped me from calling WinAMP 2.x a perfect player.
Yes I do want to name French songs properly, and to have Russian song names in Russian.

This is not a new feature, this is a proper handling of existing features.
All what needed is:

  • Unicode support across application interface with language packs
  • Support of Unicode characters in filenames
  • Support of Unicode characters in ID3 tags
  • Support of UTF playlists

This is all that was needed to make WinAMP2 complete before starting to look at adding new features.

--------------------------------------
Anyways, with new features 3 nits:

  • Add file info viewing for video files. This is basically info about audio and video streams, type of encoding, bandwidth, resolution, and so on.
  • Remember the video window size choice: half, normal or double. And retain it between WinAMP sessions.
  • WinAMP eats almost twice more of CPU during video playback than WMP9. This is just not in WinAMP2 spirit.

If you want WinAMP's video player component to become totally amazing - employ this guy if you can get in touch with him: http://www.sasami2k.com/
Because you simply can't make anything better or cooler video-player-wise than what he made (although it hasn't been updated in years).

Just one request:
Don't bloat it. For god's sake keep WinAMP lean and mean and don't add any bulky and slow components to it. That's what WinAMP3 is for. And fix the video playback performance before you release anything!

kewl kewl..

one thing though, in Winamp3's library, there's a really nice feature which makes the library the playlist if you play the song from it, instead of from the playlist editor.
From what I can tell, this isn't available in 2.9..
Is that something you would consider adding?
It's not uber important but it's a nice feature.

I'm assuming that Nullsoft are forbidden from using a portable format and can't supply native support. (edit) for cdplayer.ini (/edit).

i think this is a bug:

while this version properly parses metadata from ogg files into the media library, for some reason even though selecting the album (in the album pane) will give you a list of tracks with all the details correct (including artist), sometimes the artist does not appear in the "artist" list pane...

(in other words, this means the bug i and many others reported is fixed, but there's still some integration problems, it would appear...)

Yep.
in_cdda.dll is not producing end of file skipping on CD's...
Maybe Wizard can verify this too, since he also brought this up.

The retrieving playlist window still pops up when playing a stream from ML.
Is that just the way it is, or can that be coded to run in the background?
I'm no programmer...so just let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

2.9 beta2 : Display problem in Library window

When moving divider bars repeatedly in the Libray window, the screen becomes messy (not redrawn correctly) and becomes unreadable.
This problem causes the system to hang up and I can't provide a screen image.

I'm running Win98SE.
My system is stable with other multimedia applications such as MusicMatch, Sonic Foundry, Cakewalk, ...
So, I think it's really a bug in Winamp 2.9 beta2.

Regards

1) What do you mean exactly? ( by "key")
Hard drives are hard drives, regardless of whether they're ide, scsi, or usb.
"Devices" means CD-ROMs, Portable MP3 Players, etc.

2) No idea. Probably not

3) Why? No easy way & not recommended.
You can send main.dat to any text editor (btw, mine's currently 2.26mb)
but because it's binary, you'll probably just corrupt the database by editing it.
Edit the library via the library interface!

@ UJ
Yup, the only feature now missing from in_cdda is support for cdplayer.ini
[edit] oops, I tell a lie . . . cddb http port 80 support for proxy connections!
This STILL needs implementing! [/edit]

@Delicates
Sure, Unicode support is a long time issue. I'll leave this one to the Nullsoftians.
Bloat? The Lite version will never be bloated
ML and Video are just plugins, like any other plugins.
CPU usage high? Not here it isn't. Anyone else?
Uses between 3% and 18% depending on video format.

@comique
There's a "disable screensaver in full screen mode" option in:
Prefs -> Video
but alas, no option for windowed mode...
(same as in WA3)
For now, I guess the only solution would be to increase the time for screensaver to kick in, or temporarily disable it ?!

@zootm & wa717779
Yup.

Don't worry I'm not stressed. I just think that it's important to get these things right. Clearly, my point is a valid one. Most fonts look poor at 7px height.

You could say -- ahh but you put up with 6px high text in the main window song scroller before. However, we're talking about a title of a window. This is often a lot bigger. I think therefore more space has to be allocated and this needs to be slightly more flexible -- you've shown it can be done by the variable width feature. Why not allow a variable height (one height for all the letters, tho)? It'll make updating old skins and designing cool new ones a lot better.

There's no point kicking Winamp's best feature (skinning) in the foot just for the sake of... well, for the sake of what?

With regard to the ML and PL, personally, I've adjusted to just having the ML open. For me there's no point having both open -- it's too much screen real estate (I'm on 1280x1024).

As I'm sure you are, I'm just striving to make Winamp better. Just giving you some feedback. I apologise if it sounded a lil' stressed

DJEgg > thanks for your answer. so i have a question ( bug report..?)
you say "mp3players" .so like the muvo from creative, it's an mp3player...but a little harddrive too (reconize as external hard drive). And so, perhaps the "device can include all data storage (yes, why not a little explorer (little is : not expanded : just the letter : C:\D:\...) > so we can easy move the mp3...in Device menu !

Why isn't the lastest out_ds 2.2.7 included?

this would be quite a good feature - to recognise all "removable" devices as mp3 players etc. are recognised...
