Why do I hate pop? Simple. Most of the people who sing it are totally fake.
Computer enhanced singing
Computer enhanced dancing
Computer enhanced looks
Scripts on how to behave during interviews
Annoying music
I just... Don't like it... Closest thing I like to pop is Sum 41, and even then I only like 3 of their songs.

I find them to be unoriginal, uninspiring, and just generally lame.

It's shallow music for shallow people... The individuals who buy it actually like it - I suspect they also watch reality TV and soaps. A cultured life there then.

using a lot of smilies doesn't help you to get your point across, apola it only makes you look like you are a joke.
so less smilies and more dept in your answers would do a lot good

there is a big difference between USING smilies and USING to much smilies.
if you want to get your point across than use smilies as extra's but if you use like 3 or 4 smilies behind every line you write it kinda makes your post look like a joke.

I guess I've always ignored the mainstream. That means not following what they like, but also not avoiding what they like, either. I guess you could say my own attitude towards pop is to not acknowledge what's popular and what's not. I like what I like, and if something obscure I've liked for years gets used in a car commercial, or hits the radio, I won't change how I feel about it. I bend for no one. Bad for relationships, but good for principles.

I do like the idea of supporting indie labels and artists, but I still "spread myself out" in terms of what I like. I like some indie, I like some lightly commercialized stuff, I like some mass-commercialized stuff, and I have a few "never been produced" items as well (four demos and one pre-production album).

So, the bottom line for me is that I usually don't know what's popular, and to be honest I don't care. I've got these forums (and others) for exposure to new stuff, AMG to research new stuff, Amazon to sample new stuff, and then I buy what I get attached to. Whether it's Bikini Kill or LeAnn Rimes is incidental.

Whether it's someone completely unproduced and no one else has ever heard before, or if it's a 10-billion album-selling pop artist, if I like the way the sound moves my eardrums, then I'm a fan of it. That's really all that music comes down to for me.

I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash.

I'd like to follow this model...... but I can't!! For me, anything that makes it into the mainstream may be suspect. Let's face it - most of the mainstream is suspect. If I liked Madonna's new song I still wouldn't own it.

There's always a better alternative.

That makes sense. But I'm completely ignorant of the mainstream. I'd probably feel the same way you do, but I don't know what is "suspect" because I don't have that first bit of knowledge to start from...what is "mainstream"?

It's a matter of doing what it takes to be "in the know" about what's "popular". Radio? I never listen to AM or FM. I never listen to internet radio. I listen to Sirius satellite radio a total of about one hour per year, and then it's indie or deep alternative stations only, so I'm not hearing much mainstream there. Music videos? I never watch the stuff...at all...not for years. Entertainment magazines? I read about ten pages per year. That's why I used the example of "car commercials", because that (and perhaps movie soundtracks) is about the only way I can tell a tiny bit about what's in the "mainstream".

I *do* know what was popular in the mid-to-distant past, and a lot comes to my attention that way. For instance, I'm listening right now to Bruce Springsteen's Philadelphia, because I loved the movie, and the song did get some radio airplay waaaay back when I listened to pop radio. But like I said, the only way I ever hear anything new nowadays is from you people here (and in a few other forums).

I really prefer it this way. All (*erm*...most ) of you know a helluva lot more about what's good and what's not than most MTV VJs, or most radio DJs, and so forth. I get a bit of advice from you, I follow it to AMG to research it, then to Amazon to hear it, then if I like it I'll get the album. If not I'll come back and listen for another bit of advice. And in return, I share what I like with people as well, and try to help them find things they might like but haven't heard yet. It's the "community" aspect that really has the most affect on me for discovering new things to hear. Not radio or television. You people are much more entertaining than radio or TV, anyway.

But it doesn't change the fact that I still have no idea what is "popular" or "mainstream". So you're saying Madonna is still popular? Like, she's had music in the last five years played on the radio? I honestly didn't know that.....

I haven't got a clue what's in the mainstream either, but one way or another I get to hear about Atomic Kitten, Girls Aloud, Cheeky Girls, Westlife etc. *just puked all over my shoes*. If the Cheeky Girls released a fantastic track I wouldn't consider getting it. No way.

Unfortunately, you can't sheild yourself from the mainstream totally...

Don't joke Cylob.
Bryan and Kerry, who got married in January 2002, already have two children, Molly and Lilly Sue but now they are thinking about adopting a child.
It's partly because his wife, former Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona, spent most of her childhood in care.
Kerry sometimes lived with her mother in Liverpool, but also spent time with eight different foster families.

Now this showbiz couple want to give something back and help a child without a family.

And please I want to tell everyone that Bryan was named Celebrity Dad of the Year 2003 where he beated Tony Blair, David Beckham and Bob Geldof, who are all great fathers.
Here is the link if anyone is interested

So Cylob don't try to make fun of it.

are you saying we should take this shit about people we don't care about for serious??????

we got better things to do than read about some couple we don't care about.

on the subject: if you want to read about good things singers do apola I'd think you should read about the bridgeschool project or famers aid - both Neil Young projects- that's not one kid that gets help but the bridgeschool projects support hondreds of kids and the farmers aid supports more than one farmer.

and Neil never got an award for it, he simply just does this without the glamour and glitter.

Apola, for what it's worth, I don't hate Westlife (regardless of jokes made). As I said a few posts up, I don't avoid the "mainstream" because I have no concept of what's in the mainstream. Before I joined the these forums, I had never heard of Westlife. I don't "hate" things I've never heard of, and I've still never heard their music, so I still don't hate them. But even if it's not "our kind of music", I'm proud of you standing up for yourself... You go girl!

Everybody holds their own torch for a different kind of music. That's the glory of music: VARIETY

i won't throw rotten tomatoes at you chris for giving a personal vieuw on the point.

my point is I know their music and don't like it ( not that it is terrible but it's not my style in music)
The bloody thing that pisses me of is the way apola pimps the music - she can't make one single post without revering to the shit.
If apola would be more open minded about other styles and should post boy bands now and than it should all clear up for her.
She gains no respect with the way she makes statements about a style of music in the way she does.
He I like Neil Young but do you see me rever to him every post i make. You like Pink Floyd but not every post you make has got something to do with Pink Floyd.

been ramblin'on for far to long again.

boy bands --> 1,700,000 results
rock 'n' roll --> 2,940,000 results
boy band AND rock --> 2,540,000 results

So, by these numbers, boy bands comprise 86.4% of the rock genre in music?

and to quote her it's the best music ever, so why defend it?????

Google search results can be tough. All it takes is one tiny change to make them come out verrrrrry different.

(Anyhow...regardless of the numbers, it never addressed whether boy bands are even part of "rock", but I think we have a consensus here on that matter anyway. )

Thanks a lot guys.
I was little disappointed looking at someone’s comment but you all are so good........I love you all.
Here I go again......long live boy-bands!
So, will someone start "Music O'Rama Compilations: Pop"?(Due to public demand or something I’m not using the word "boy-bands" but giving you all more options by using the word "pop") Or it has to be me who will start?
I can start but will you answer? Or like someone said, you all will boycott my threads and me?
