There is no real point. CDs are in stereo, not surround. Thus, all the music you encode will be in stereo, not surround, regardless of the format.

Plus, given the absymal failure of mp3pro, I doubt this will go far either.

According to this post, the package already contains a Winamp plugin. Due to licensing costs, don't ever expect any more than that :/

What about transcoded AC3, transcoded DTS, transcoded AAC, or audio created natively in MP3-S format?

What about it? You'll still have to use the 3rd-party Thomson plugin, just like you have to for all proprietry formats. Nullsoft already pays them for a standard MP3 Decoding licence, and aren't gonna pay them anything more - never!

My recommendation? Stick with .AC3 or aacPlus or .ogg.
Do NOT transcode!

Thomson/FhG fouled up once with mp3pro. Have they not learnt from their mistakes? Or is this new format also going to have the .mp3 extension as well? If so, then it deserves to die before it even takes off.

Yeah, after MP3Pro, this will be gone within months. There already is AAC and AC3 and Vorbis. We don't need another half ass attempt at a surround sound codec.

It is.

It does make sense since the format is supposed to be backwards compatible, using the .mp3 extension means the files will be playable in every player.

Fuck this place.
