When did GC fans become "preps" all the sudden?

Haha, if you think GC fans are preps you really don't know anything thing then, most of us are about the farthest thing from that!

If a preppy likes GC great and all because it's about the music. But my point is, Good Charlotte were outcasts growing up, any true punk is, so you see, the fans that love them so much and understand where they're coming from are also outcasts.

Good Charlotte is not true punk though, your missing the main point. It's called Pop Punk.

Why was a thread made just for this? Was it supposed to be a reply to some other post by accident?

I think this article from wikipedia.org sums up my opinion of Good Charlotte in terms of the "punk culture" pretty well:
Quote:
Though the band members dress and act in a stereotypically punk rock manner, they are almost universally rejected within the punk scene. Veteran punk fans claim that the band goes against every part of the anti-commercial, do-it-yourself ethos that punk was founded on. They argue that Good Charlotte is only cashing in on the current trendiness of the genre; citing as evidence their frequent appearances on MTV and magazine covers as well as their fondness for major record labels (as opposed to the smaller labels that supported early punk music) and brand name clothing.

Oh a load of s!#% is it? Guess what, outcasts can be middle to upper class kids too. Lots of people have problems regardless of their parents financial status, it's not easy for everyone to fit in. Many GC fans are greatful that they can have someone to connect with. I am too.

Another point would be that what most people consider True Punk tends to have a political slant to it also. From what I've heard of Good Charlotte (I'm far from an expert though) it lacks that. GC falls into the Emo category, which suffers from the woe is me and preppy crowd stigma.

"I dunno, but it pisses me off! in my school, i started wearing converse, then the preps started wearin them, an i stopped!"
Anyone can follow the trend of liking them because MTV plays them but the people who are the true fans will be there long after, all the trends are gone, GC brought a new sound to the scene, it was totally different and like I said, the preps can enjoy it, but after a while, they'll go back to living their perfect existence. They'll never truly understand what it was like for the rest of us.

Punk isn't about outcasts. It never was.
Punk isn't about the way you dress - It never was.
As John Lydon once said, "I fucking hate punks, they seem to have adopted some type of uniform".

MTV plays them on its own volition? No, their record company asks MTV to play them. Can you honestly provide a solid example of how Good Charlotte is truly involved in any type of political or social upheaval?

Why are you putting quotation marks around your own sentances Soheil?

GC did not bring a new sound to the scene, they followed everyone else into the scene. Then they switched from their pop-punk status to emo. They don't have their own sound, they follow others.

Don't call yourself a punk or an outcast either. It makes you look really lame and full of yourself, especially when you say it and listen to GC at the same time.

You won't know the meaning of an outcast until your kicked out of your own house by your parents and have no one that will take you in. Not your relatives or anyone. You can't go to friends because you have none. Your stuck. A bum.

That's an outcast. Not one of the kids in school that wears a Slipknot shirt and says their hardcore.

I knew a kid who wore a Slipknot shirt.
He put a 12 gague in his mouth and blew his head off on the steps in front of my brother's high school.

Grrr... I hate it when I can't put something into words. All I can really say is that it's usually high schoolers that associate being an outcast and music. They get picked on, so they listen to violent, antisocial, depressing, woe is me music. Not that listening to that kind of music makes you that way, but self described "outcasts" make that music their way of life, while using their allowance to buy it while their suburban parents pay for everything else.

I agree with your very first post on this thread Namelessv1, I actally never cared for GC "Good Charlotte", idk just never appealed 2 me. I agree that the fact is record companys put their bands on MTV and such so they can get mo $$$$$$$$$$$. The bands sorta have no choice, if GC would have picked a not so money hounding record label maybe they wouldnt have ended up on MTV and magazines and such. But the whole thing sorta makes me confused

Here is how I see it. I remember when GC released their debut album. (The one from 2000 right? Im certainly no expert on GC.) I was only 11, but I remember loving the shit out of all I heard on MTV. To tell you the truth, that album doesn't suck, in fact, it was very catchy and had great hits on it. I WAS FUCKING ELEVEN! Im 17 now, I've matured, have you?

Unfortunately, all they are doing now is cashing in on their image. If you can't see that, then you are being played by their MTV marketing machine. Seriously, that song "boys and girls"? How fucking worse can it get than that piece of shit? How about those two singles they just released? Pure major label driven ass. They're success is only matched by their use of cliches.

Seriously, go out and listen to some real music. By that I mean music by people with real talent.Oh , and your not an outcast or a rebel. Your a hypocrit.

I wasn't using very good math. Technically Im 16, but only for a few more days now, so, 2005, thats 16-5years=11. So 12\11, not much of a difference. Good Charlotte suck, thats what is most important.

"*plays violins for the pitty party throwers*"
*ahem* now back to the subject at hand. One doesnt have to be an outcast or have lots of problems to like gc.You make it almost sound like its a rule that any gc fan has to have problems or they cant like them.As for mentioning the financial status I did that because some of you love to get off on bashing different groups of people because of were they shop and financial status etc etc etc."

No one is asking you to play violins. Are you too stupid to get the point of this or what? Like it or not, GC songs are written for people who don't fit in in life some how. People who aren't the most popular or the most attractive, awkward people and some time rebellious people, in general their stuff means more to people like that as opposed to someone who is popular and who is attractive. Hope you can understand all that!

Why I hate GC. Well, I should say I don't like most of the poppunk genre cause it irritates me, but this is the exact cause against GC for me.

From "The Anthem"

Quote:
Do you really wanna to be like them
Do you really wanna be another trend
do you wanna be a part of that crowd

Cause i dont ever wanna
No i dont ever wanna be you
Dont wanna be just like you
what I'm saying is
this is the anthem
Trow all your hands up
YOU...don't want to be you!
I don't wanna look like you, so I'll put on the punk uniform instead.

You seem to be fixated on the idea that because Good Charlotte ostensibly does not fit into this social hierarchy you despise, they are somehow "fighting the good fight." Quite honestly, you're exaggerating a social "conflict" that is ultimately trivial. Like Spazz says, nonconformity for the sake of nonconformity is still conformity.

I'm thinking he meant that some people who wear those clothes actually do feel outcast, enough to kill themselves. Then again I'm sure that there are a few people who listen to Boy Bands and the like that have done the same thing.

One thing before I bow out of this "discussion"

Other than once or twice, /you/ were the only one to call GC fans preps. We give reasons why a lot of people see them that way, the only counter argument is basicly "Fuck off, quit calling us preps."
