Bandwidth/Server requirements
I am looking into a dedicated server for my station.
2 questions: what minimum server requirements would be needed to handle 1000 128k streams from a shoutcast server. would 1000gb/month cover an average of 1000 128k concurrent listeners? I ask these questions because my station is beginning to grow at a rate that will require me to cap my service I have now or upgrade to some dedicated server package. The server packages I have been looking into range for cpu speeds, ram, etc. I want to be prepared before my station catches on. Oh yeah, one last question I almost forgot. I didn't personally install the shoutcast server I have now. I inherited the station. Is setting up a shoutcast server on a remote host difficult or require any special knowledge? I was told I would need to use SSH to get the server up and running. Please forgive my ingnorance. rules!

No 1000gb wouldn't nearly even come close to covering this.
Use the bandwidth calculator here: http://www.radiotoolbox.com/online_tools/bandwidth.php |

I have been playing with that calculator for awhile and don't think I understand streaming well enough to understand what I am calculating.
How would I calculate a real life example of 100 concurrent listeners for a period of 1 month 30 days if I were encoding at 56kb/s (7.0 KBytes/s)? There were so many different choices I got lost. Quote:

1. Select period usage..
2. Select 'bits' and 'bandwidth usage'. 3. 1 Month and then 56 and 100. You would consume: 13,842.773 Gbit(s) or 1,730.347 Gbyte(s) So basically, this would use 1730gb if you have 100 users connected 24/7. |

So if I bought the least expensive package which is 1000gb month transfer I would want to set my cap for concurrent listeners at 57 to avoid overages. Would that be correct?
My result was period usage.. 'bits' and 'bandwidht usage' 1 Month , 56, 57 You would consume: 7,890.381 Gbit(s) or 986.298 Gbyte(s) Quote:

A single user listening all month at 128k will consume anywhere from 40-45 Gb of traffic.
So 20 max 128k users will keep you out of the red with 1000gb of traffic. BB 192k Mp3 HIGH DEFINITION | BB 24k Mp3 | BB 20k WMA | BB Community __________________________ My Host - Fast-Serv.com | Free Shoutcast Hosting - Coming Soon... |

This is so confusing...is there a way for me to track my average concurrent listeners using shoutcast...the listener numbers rize and fall all day and night. I'd like to be able to know what the average concurrent listeners for a single day is so I can match that up to the bandwidth my webhost says I'm using. Something doesn't jive with the numbers I am seeing.

I just found sawmill for parsing log files...this is some interesting stuff. Gave me an exact report of how many times a single song has been streamed/heard...anyone else use sawmill?

Been playing with radio toolbox for a few hours...cool stuff thanks for pointing it out. I was at the site before but only used the calculator...guess I should have looked around a bit.

Thanks for the info. This comes in real handy. I have been using tools to watch my bandwidth and it isn't as bad as I once thought it was going to be.
