5.2 crashes when I try to open a file outside of Winamp folder

Whenever I play a file that is within the folder that Winamp 5.2 installed in (for me C:/Program Files/Winamp), the files, every one of them, play fine without any problems. However, when I go to a different directory to play files there, it's hit or miss. In the My Music folder, it has crashed every single time I open a file(about a few seconds after the song starts, which is very bizzare). What's worse, it has happened when I go to CLOSE Winamp, minimize it and/or work in another window above it, or just CRASH regardless of what else I'm doing (at any of those times). In other folders I've checked so far (one as a navigational tree past My Documents), I haven't experienced this issue so far, but I am expecting to get hit with it whenever I try to play MP3s. This never occured for me when using 5.13!

This is with a completly clean install (I used the Add/Remove programs window AND deleted the C:/Program Files/Winamp folder before reinstalling 5.2, as I did a dirty install with 5.2 and got the exact same issues beforehand) without a single third party plugin. I've also tried the configuration file deletion workaround, and this is STILL doing it. It's gotten extremely fustrating for me as I really have enjoyed using Winamp and this is discouraging for me to ever use it again until I figure out what is going on.

Please, someone HELP!!

Not sure what you mean by crashing, but the older version of winamp used to play every file (wav, mp3, etc) once I double clicked on the file. This new version is "hit and miss" as you say. Sounds like they improved something that wasn't broken and actually broke it. I have returned to associating all my sound files with Windows Media player. At least it works.

All it says is "Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close" in a new window in SP2, with no choice but to comply and for it to close out.

By the way, I'll bump this up by showing you the actual window I'm talking about. It's EVERY SINGLE FILE that I try to open from this particular folder (the "My Music" folder, or any subfolders within it). So far, any other file in any other folder besides this one is fine and never creates this problem:

(If you cannot see this (the hosting company that I have this pic on is sort of unstable when displaying some images, that's why I say that), it says "Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost." It's followed by options to send the "error report" to Microsoft.)

Keep in mind that this doesn't happen until I go to click on a whole different winder and/or minimize Winamp, and this didn't happen on 5.13 at ALL, though this occurance has happened to me every time I tried to use 5.2 with this folder, which is my main music folder. I'm sure it could be the same with other files in other folders, too, and I know they aren't the files, because every other player I have tried otherwise have played every single file that Winamp downright refuses to work right with is able to play them perfectly. So it HAS to be Winamp. And I'm quite surprised that I haven't gotten an answer as to why this is just yet.

PLEASE, let me know what I can do ASAP. This is extremly fustrating.

Crash on Next-Track Advance

Hi there,

more or less exactly the same for me.
Same error!

Since I am running Winamp 5.2 Pro I got this problem.
Nearly every time I have loaded a playlist and a song is currently playing and I simply press the 'Next Track (>>)' button to advance the playlist to the next track manually - Winamp crashes totally - as already described here!

The previous version (Winamp 5.13 Pro) didn't do that at all!

So it really seems, that Winamp 5.2 is not really usable.

I am using it on WinXP Pro, SP2 - German.

THX for your help in advance

I kept getting the update popup when I started winamp. To make it stop I just upgraded, and then it started crashing just like everone else here. I couldnt find the old version so I just used one of the P2P programs that I use and found the 5.13 version that didnt have a single problem. now its running fine. Although I have to deal with that upgrade popup, at least I can still use winamp.

WTF!!!

O.K. I was wrong its now starting to crash. Why would there be an upgrade to something that already works. Cant anyone who wrote this program reply to this thread and offer some sort of support to fix this?

Guess what...I was wrong, too. Now it is just ANY MP3 outside of the Winamp folder that it crashes with, not just those in the My Music folder.

Maybe there is some significance, though, that this has happened only to MP3's of mine so far, and not to WAVs (the only other file type I've tried). It seems that streaming files work fine also. It's just MP3s, for some weird reason, refuse to work all the way (once I do ANYTHING outside of Winamp while the file is playing at ALL, it's all over).

Does ANYONE have ANY explination of this? I'm happy now to see that this is not just me that this is happening too, and I'm really surprised at this point that NO Winamp tech support person has even READ this yet, it seems (or I'm sure someone would say something about it or help us).

Their response may be the difference in them losing our support (which is happening VERY quickly with me at the apparent ignoring of this), so I don't know WHY they are not responding to this one. C'mon, Winamp, say SOMETHING about this.

EDIT: Ok, now it seems to not want to play ANY type file without doing the above to me. THIS IS SERIOUS AND IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF!! C'MON!!

EDIT 2: Ok, now it seems that it doesn't even want to give me a crash alert. Anytime I am about 10 seconds into directing it to open a file, the entire program just completly closes out altogether. I've never seen Winamp do this in my life. Is it the particular time I downloaded it or something? This is why we need an answer, and we need it NOW!!

I finally got mine to work. I went even further back, I found and installed 5.12. That seemed to work but... I as well had a problem with the mp3s mine was showing as the file type winamp medis but it had the windows media player icon in front of it. And when I tried to play these it wouldnt play them telling me that it was an mp3. NO KIDDING!?! Then it asked me if I wanted it to find the correct program to open that file or find it myself. To fix that I went into the windows preferences, and for whatever reason those changed. I didnt go in there and change them, I thought this was particularly weird, but I changed them back. Now I a oooold version of winamp that is working perfectly. This latest version sounds like someone is just trying to justify there position with the company by fixing something that didnt need to be fixed int the first place.

It would be alright if the mods or SOMEONE within Winamp would give us SOME sort of answer, but they've ignored all of us completly for some weird reason.

No, you've not been ignored. It's just that when there's hundreds of different threads to deal with, and when we see one which has got 10 (or 24) replies, it's easy to assume that someone is already dealing with it.

This is why it is always best policy to keep to one person per thread, ie. not for 5 (or even 10) different people to post with the same problem in the same thread, but instead start your own thread and just post links to any other similar threads (eg. Hi, I've got the same problem as here and here, I've tried this and that, here are my system specs and required info, please help, thanks).

It's also not easy trying to respond to too many different people in the same thread, some of who may have the same problem, some of who might have a similar problem, and some of whose problem may be totally different.

Basically, it also helps to read this first

We need to know the details of the Error Message
c/o To see what data this error report contains click here

AppName: winamp.exe | ModName: ? | ModVer: ? | Offset: ?

We need to see a my_plugin_list.txt file (even if you don't have any 3rd-party plugins, because it will still show us which of the default plugins are present, eg. we don't know if you unselected half of them in the Installer Options or not)... and a HijackThis log would also prove useful, to show us a list of startup & concurrently running processes.

Both logs should preferably be zipped and attached to your post.

Full info c/o above link.

If you don't have ANY 3rd-party plugins, skins, or Language Packs installed, then it could well be an issue with one of the default plugins, and possibly the new Portable Media Player support plugins/components, or maybe the Sonic Burning Engine, or maybe something else.... we shall see, hopefully.

Per your request, here is the desired info. Hope this will help you (and hope I did this right):

AppName: winamp.exe
AppVer: 5.2.0.473
ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 03a18370

(there was no other information given in the report)

Besides the Hawthore Heights file I got with the install, every other file and file type causes this problem with me. It seems to only happen when I click on a window behind the Winamp window on XP SP2 or minimize Winamp.

The Hijack this and plugins list are enclosed. Hope that helps.

And THANK YOU for replying, finally.

I was getting the same problem. Guess what...I got back to winamp 2.91, and solved the problem. Jumps instantly on click plays almost everything, best winamp ever.

@darkpowrjd

Yeah, I downloaded the attachment last night. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, but it involved quite a bit of research, heh.

Alas, you've got a fair amount of malware on your system, so let's try to clean it up first and see if that helps at all.

MAN THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF WORK just to get an upgrade to work. Is it worth it? No doubt no one needs malicious software coursing through a computers veins. But I have serious doubts that is what is keeping an upgrade from working properly. I have a billion and one spyware/malware and virus programs. Maybe im a little paranoid. maybe Im not. But it never fixed my problem. I was have the very same problem. I got mine to work. and I didnt have to take all these steps outlined above to do it.

I'm not getting this. Then of course, it could be that my files are in some outside folder. You state that it also happens in all folders outside the Winamp directory. I've played like 6 songs since I upgraded to 5.2 (a few hundred times each totalling around 2500 plays in all) and not once have I got a crash. I even double-clicked some MP3's that I converted, causing Winamp to load, and I still haven't gotten any crash yet. Then again, it could be that all my song files are stored in

C:\My Documents\Songs\*.*

after the Windows 98 path (even though I run on XP Pro). I don't have any plug-ins installed either, except those that come with Winamp by default, of which only two have been configured (WaveOut and Waveform Decoder - for seemless looping and converting 8-bit to 16-bit to get the equalizer to work). I wonder if it's because my files are stored in that directory instead?

void BlueWater() {water.color=blue; while(GameRunning) {if (fox.pos == InBlueWater) {fox.air--; FoxDrown(fox.air);} else {fox.air=1800; fox.flags = WantsToGetWet; } WaitFrames(1); }} // My top favorite thing in 2D Sonic (as C)

I have noticed that there are many people here that the only complaint is basic useability of the program with no complaints about crashing or files not running with the correct program. I wouldnt mind having the latest and the greatest but what is causing these problems? Mine is still working fine when I downgraded.

I'd be very surprised if darkpowrjd wasn't having any other major issues with Windows and other programs in general. He's got worms, trojans, spyware, adware all installed and permanently running in the background. No software developer will offer support or accept that their software is to blame for any issues whenever a system is that infected with malware.

@haichid

If you require support, then do as darkpowrjd did and provide the info and logs.

And as stated in the Read Me First, it always helps to start your own thread and not hijack other people's. Trying to respond properly to more than one person in the same thread is not an easy task.

Did you try a clean install without the Portable Media Player support (pmp_p4s in particular)?

@ulillillia

We're not getting it either. Winamp 5.2 runs as smooth as a baby's on all the systems we've tried it on, and on all of the dev's, beta tester's and forum regular's systems. Then again, I guess those systems aren't corrupted by and riddled with malware.

Keeping your system's security in check is always a great thing to do. I'm a little obsessed with it having 4 firewalls, a realtime virus/spyware blocker, Go Back, and even wise computer safety knowledge. On top of that, I run backups every now and then. Oh, and don't just have one spyware scanner, have several. Some have definitions that others don't which adds to the usefulness. Just some tips to consider.

XP comes with a firewall. My router also has one. Then I have Zone Alarm (of which I highly recommend, even if it's just the free version), and Norton Internet Security's firewall.

Ever since version 5.03, of which I've since actively used Winamp, I haven't had any major troubles, except one. I've had a few minor ones such as the clock running slightly slower than normal and when I run in fullscreen, the window positions aren't locked. Other than that, nothing special. Winamp continually logs thousands of plays on my songs, some into the 5-digits range....

Edit: Oh, and that the equalizer's values are not equidistant, again very minor. The clock thing may not even be Winamp's fault at all though.

void BlueWater() {water.color=blue; while(GameRunning) {if (fox.pos == InBlueWater) {fox.air--; FoxDrown(fox.air);} else {fox.air=1800; fox.flags = WantsToGetWet; } WaitFrames(1); }} // My top favorite thing in 2D Sonic (as C)

re: dj egg

Mine is working fine now that I have downgraded. As well part of the problem was that somehow some of the files had switched to windows media player when I hadnt set them to do so. I use Winamp for music only. Personally I think its sounds better. Im pretty sure part of the problem with file associations has something to do with spy/ad/malware. I have been cleaning that up and hopefully will have the latest version of Winamp up and running. But it just blows my mind why there are problems with this upgrade for some as well as myself when there has never been a problem before. I was adding to this to hopefully help out with basic troubleshooting I wasnt aware that I was hijacking a thread, I certainly didnt mean to do that. Now Im going to cross my fingers and give it another shot. From what I have read so far 5.2 is worth having.

No, you're not hijacking a thread if you're just helping out in it.
