Winamp 5.21 crashes when tagging
I have a problem when coping tags from ID3v2 to ID3v1.
Winamp crashes after doing a few files and generates a windows error report. Winamp will reopen and continue on after the crash. Does anybody have any idea on this problem. I did a clean install and the program works fine otherwise. |

I have a similar problem when tagging. It doesn't happen all of the time, however.
I'm using Winamp Pro 5.21 on Windows XP Professional SP2. So far, Winamp has crashed when I've been playing music and correcting some tags in MP3 files using the "Edit selected items... Ctrl+E" option in the Media Library. I submit a crash report, and I'm eventually directed here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...f3c4ad&SID=588 According to that page, "Nullsoft Inc. informed Microsoft that they have a solution available for the problem you reported." The page then links to the free player download page, which totally confuses me. I have Winamp Pro. Why would I need to download the free player? Is it true that Nullsoft has a solution to this problem? If so, where is it for the PRO version of Winamp?? |

It's happened to me a few times too and I haven't been able to isolate it or deliberately reproduce it. I was waiting to report it until I figured out what was happening.
/edit p.s. Full and Pro are exactly the same except for a prompt to enter the reg key when installing Pro if you haven't previously entered it. |

I have had this problem consistently with both 5.20 and 5.21. I'm disappointed that the problem wasn't corrected in 5.21. The program crashes while writing a tag after between 2 and 20 tags have been written. The crash occurs whether tags are done in bulk or manually one at a time. It doesn't happen at the same number of tag writes, but if tags continue to be written, a crash is inevitable.
I've tried uninstalling & reinstalling with no luck. I used the free versions of 5.2 and 5.21 running on WinXP SP2, 2GB RAM. The inability to tag makes the recent version useless to me and I'm backed out to 5.13, where the problem doesn't exist. Anyone from winamp care to comment? I'm wondering if this is a bug you are aware of and if it will be taken care of soon. Thanks |

I use Registry Mechanic and I spent time last night and did uninstalls - reinstalls and scans.
What I determined is when Winamp 5.21 Pro installs. It creates a corrupted line in the registry. Each time Registry Mechanic found 1 error and the registry key was unreadable. After deleting the line Winamp worked good. |

I retried to re-create the problem last nite and I had no luck.
The program installed with no recorded errors. Winamp 5.21 pro now is very slow opening using about 300 mbs of Page Filing. The crashes happened but a lot less frequently. Sometimes I could do a 100 or more files and no problems.Other times do a few and get a crash. Sorry I could not diagnose this issue further. I probably will go back to 5.13 |

We can't reproduce the problem.
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs Was this a clean install of 5.21 with no 3rd-party plugins? If not, then please provide a list of all (1st and 3rd-party) plugins installed. What file formats does the problem occur with? mp3 only? m4a, aac, wma, ogg, other? What are the exact (numbered) steps to reproduce the problem? What are the details of the crash error message? (cparker: no, microsoft doesn't forward any crash logs, you need to submit them here). See first link above for details. |

This was a clean install of 5.21 pro.
I have no plug ins installed. The only plug ins are what come with the download exe. I will post the error as best I can next time it happens. |

Right now, I'm sticking with MP3, because all of the other file types are only marginally supported everyhwere, whereas MP3 is supported regardless of what I want to listen to my music on. There really aren't any exact (numbered) steps to reproduce the problem. If you were reading the description of the problem, you'd know exactly under what conditions it happens. There really weren't any crash details. I just got a Windows prompt saying Winamp had to be closed, asking me if I wanted to submit a crash report. It didn't include any details at all. Why would Microsoft lie to people using the OCA system, saying Nullsoft had a solution for my problem? Perhaps Nullsoft should be contacting Microsoft and asking them to stop lying about Nullsoft's activities. It's very frustrating having two official sources tell me (as a paying customer) two completely contrary things. If MS is lying about sending Nullsoft these crash reports, something needs to be done about this. I can't help it. I'm not even on the totem pole. If you could provide some detailed instructions on how to forward these crash reports to Nullsoft instead of Microsoft, then I'll be happy to do so, as long as it's something that's within the bounds of what a typical user can handle. Otherwise, again, someone from Nullsoft should be contacting Microsoft and demanding that they receive these mystical crash reports they claim they've been sending you. Perhaps even some lawyers can resolve this issue. Lying is unacceptable, I don't care who is doing it. |

I got Winamp 5.21 to work!!!
I did another full un-install then I ran Registry Mechanic and cleared all winamp references. I restarted the comp. Installed Winamp. The only difference I did was I De-selected the Sonic cd burning. Winamp opened normally and I had no problems with Tagging. I did 500 mp3s without a crash. I will update if problems occur. |

Also having the same problem
I'm having the same problem as well. But it has happened occasionally since 5.2.. I am running 5.21 now.
It usually occurs when I'm editing the comment field. It also happens when I use Joonas' Tagger plugin (the new Winamp 5.2 version). But, once again, only occasionally. I was able to reproduce it on 1 file over and over again... I had forgotten to put something in the comment field, so I opened up the tag editor from a right click on the file in the playlist window. I edited the comment field on the ID3v1 side, then pressed copy to ID3v2, and pressed the update button. Winamp crashed. Same thing happened next time I tried. I also tried with Joonas plugin, and it died as well. I rarely have problems if I go from ID3v2 to ID3v1. The error message that I received after the "send/don't send" box that windows pops up was 'The instruction at "0x7c80979d" referenced memory at "0x016d0024". The memory could not be "written". ' edit: I retagged that file with Tag&Rename and then tried again in winamp, and it worked flawlessly. |

When you do an Un-install Windows leaves the folder skins and .sys file. Make sure you delete both of those and then install winamp. Mine is working good after doing this. Winamp crashed while tagging when I accidently restored the .sys file. I redid the uninstall and reinstall and it is running good.

--- It's frustrating to try to reproduce this because it takes a different number of ID3v2 tag updates to cause a crash each time. Sometimes it takes many ID3 edits and sometimes only one or two. So, first things first: Win 2k sp4, AMD Athlon XP2000+ ~1.7GHz, 256, Creative Live (driver 80.0.0.3), Nvidia Dualview (driver 6.6.3.1), DirectX 9.0c Winamp 5.21 Full, clean install, minimal (my_plugin_list.txt attached), factory settings. First crash after about 10 minutes while using Ctrl-E in the media library. Installed One for Nunz after the first crash. Then I installed JTFE R Build 15 for its crash handler, which generated only "Unhandled exception: Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION" The source of the mp3 doesn't seem to matter (ripped by EAC/Lame, ripped by iTunes on Mac, eMusic, free from net...) I still can't duplicate it predictably. |
