Smaller updates for future Winamp releases
I'm a Winamp user since years now. I would want smaller update packages for future releases of Winamp for existing users.
Every new release brings about several fixes and updates (& some new stuff too). But I don't think that the entire download of about 5MB or so (Full) is actually needed. Instead nowadays many other programs are trying to woo users by having smaller future update patches instead of downloading the full size package for the existing users. Updates & New Releases will be an eternal aspect till the Winamp Developers keep trying to make it better, with most of the updates & fixes in new releases with a relatively 'should install/must install' nature. For me too, though some updates are good & of 'should install' nature, I leave it for a few more releases, & then download the latest release with accumulated updates & fixes. 5MB for such a wonderful program (Winamp, of course) may not be large (in fact it is smaller considering the sizes of other similar programs) as far as download time & size is concerned. However when such innumerable Winamp users want to download a newer version, even a difference of 1-2MB makes sense to go for a smaller update patch for existing users. |

5mb v 2 or 3mb?, what's the difference these days with download speeds getting faster and faster and hard drive sizes getting bigger and bigger.
I'd rather re-install the whole lot each time rather than a mish mash of patches and so on. |

What prevents the developers from implementing an automatic update function?

time, money, maintaining a consistant distribution so it's known what is shipped with a given version otherwise tech support becomes a nightmare with a mis-matched setup and it's hard enough just to get people to correctly post their winamp versions let alone dll versions (which there's a nice little tool to do that). also the way that it's all developed means you get a number of updates in one go so like Mr Jones mentions, there's really little that auto-update system would likely resolve. it's been talked about but it's low on the list (if at all) to happen
