Winamp 5.21 crashes when updating ID3v2 tags

When I update ID3v2 tags all at once and click then on 'update', the program suddenly shuts down with a pop-up window named 'Winamp has encountered a problem and has to be closed' (Well, I'm German and the text on my screen is also in German so I translated it into English).

In the Data of this "problem" window I found this:

AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.2.1.497 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0000a2ea

The funny thing: When I update the tags slowly (one change - update - another change - update - and so on) Winamp seems to go along without shutting down, although smetimes it will get closed then, too...

That's happened to me too. Any idea how to get around the problem?

How do you manage to update all the ID3 tags at once, too?

I'm having this same problem. I hoped that updating to 5.22 would fix it, but it's still happening.
And andyman: to change multiple tags at once, select multiple tracks in the media library using shift, then right-click and choose "edit selected items".

Still happening with 5.23. Just getting a "Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message. If I choose to report it to MS they tell me the crash was caused by (gasp!) Winamp. This happens both with the "Edit Selected Items" option and the "View File Info" option, at least with mp3s. .oggs have also crashed the program when I used "Edit Selected Items", I haven't tried the other option. It also happens with all the skins I have, including the official ones.

It's happened on two computers. The only similarities I know of (other than the same playlists, ml folder, and some Winamp settings files) are that they were both very stable Thinkpads (that is, Winamp is the only program that's crashed on either of them in months), they both run AVG, and they both have the Audioscrobbler 1.1.10 plugin installed.

With this and the dissappearing playlists/settings issues I've been having on both computers (I'm backing up my playlists and settings files so I can restore them using Cobian Backup) I'm considering a switch to iTunes unless someone can help.

Please provide more info (read this!). Filetype of affected files, HijackThis log, list of all plugins installed (my_plugins_list.txt), etc.
Do you get the exact same error message as Peedy1971?

Also note that only a clean install with no third-party plugins is supported.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

@Peedy1971
Need some more information in order to help/reproduce

Can you identify if the issue appers only if the tags/filename/filepath contain any of the german special characters, or every time ?
Also i would advise to update to the latest version currently v5.23, major fixes have been made in the last couple of version regarding unicode format reading/writing tags.

Also are you saving tags in UNICODE format or system locale (there are options in the in_mp3.dll module you can check once you update to v5.23)

[Edit]
by the way media library does not support Unicode yet.

NEW Multiple Output Plugin v1.5 | Download | outputs data to one or more audio/file output devices
Crystal Classic Skins v1.1 | Download | transparency effects for classic skins

siebe83: No offense, but if you'd read my post more carefully you'd have seen that I provided the filetype of affected files. If you need anything more specific you could ask, but I've checked for spyware, viruses and trojans on both computers and come up with nothing so I don't think a log will change much.

You were right that I forgot the error message though:

AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.2.3.672 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0000a2ea

Peedy seems to be getting the same error message with the exception of the version.

I should also have mentioned that before copying the files to the second Thinkpad I did use a clean install for a while, and still got the same error. I've also gotten the error without the Audioscrobbler plugin installed and only mentioned it because it was on the list you linked to.
I also didn't mention the type of installation I used, which is 'shared', and that one computer was running XP Home SP2 and the other XP Pro SP2. One's a T43p and the other's a much older model, T21e or something like that.

Also, as far as these errors go; it seems to be random as to when it happens and there aren't any specific files that trigger it. When it does crash, I can usually edit the tag on the file that seemed to trigger the crash without any trouble. It's also apparently random regarding how often it happens, I've had it happen with the very first file I tried to change and after changing several hundred files.

TazDevil: Dunno if you need my input or not, but I don't have any special characters in my tags. Not sure about the UNICODE thing though, how do I check to see if that's enabled or not?

EDIT: Just got this error message while listening to a file that triggered the error a few times (not reliably, unfortunately):

AppName: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.2.3.672 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00011f52

Dunno if that means anything or if it's some other problem or what, but I figure it was worth mentioning.

Well... I just made a HijackThis logfile of what creeps around in my notebook at this moment.

And, no, the error appears not only when I use german characters like äöü, but I can say that somehow the error seems to be somewhere near the IDv2 tags...

Okay, so I don't know what I'm talking about sometimes. For some reason I thought Hijackthis was just a spyware scanner. Anyway, here's the log.
