Exclamation ml_ipod 1.40 released: lots of new features and bugfixes

This is a major update!

For download, please go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=114821

A lot of old bugs have been fixed, memory leaks removed, and new features implemented. Those who are interested in the history can read this thread

Now, what's really new?
The most important features are Podcast support, syncing of Smart Views to Smart Playlists and Video support for 5G iPods. Also, there is a French and Chinese version included in the installer now (many thanks to Koniyan and Pierre for the translations). If you are interested in these features, make sure to read the release notes that come with the installation! They contain the necessary information. Information about the podcast stuff can also be found in this thread.

Here is the complete list of new features:
  • On-The-Go playlists finally work, saved OTG playlists are
converted into regular playlists with name "On-The-Go 1"...
  • Hotkey Ctrl-E to edit items
  • Show progress in statusbar when deleting a bunch of files
  • Podcast sync button (adds/removes only podcasts)
  • New on iPod shuffle: Podcasts and audiobooks are bookmarkable
and skipped when shuffling, podcasts are sorted to the
    beginning of playlist
  • Support for 'Comment' field in tracks
  • Sync Smart Playlists with ML Views (FR:975772)
  • Can handle databases written by "AnaPod Explorer"
  • Faster browsing on the iPod because of creation of
sorted index lists (as iTunes does it)
  • Option to fix corrupt timestamps in ML and iPod
  • syncs changed genre during smartsync
  • Hotkey "copy currently playing song to iPod" (FR:1019774)
  • <disc> tag for reverse sync (FR:1182120)
  • "Prefer iPod to Media Library" option for playback (FR:1087663)
  • Width of columns is remembered now (FR:1489621)
  • Create playlist from directory name when drag/drop from explorer
    (FR: 1421553)
  • Handling of video files (*.mp4) for 5G iPods
  • Japanese version included in installer (thanks to koniyan!)
  • French version included in installer (thanks to Pierre)

And which bugs have been fixed?
  • Playlists "SendTo iPod" broken in Winamp 5.22
  • Crash when iTunesDB and mlipodSmartPlaylists do not fit together
  • better coexistence with iTunes, does not destroy iTunes
    settings for specific songs
  • #1501220: Smart playlists created in iTunes get destroyed
  • #1502548: Playcount false when played on iPod AND in Winamp
  • AlbumArt that is loaded with iTunes or Anapod will not be
visible on iPod after transfering songs with ml_ipod
(but still ml_ipod does NOT download any album art itself)
  • RefreshAll smart playlists button does autofill, not refresh
  • Last played timestamps were garbeled
  • Smart sync ratings sometimes used wrong timestamps
  • timezone handling (daylight time)
  • geometry problems in transfer dialog with big fonts
  • Audible files (*.aa) lost their DRM signature
  • #1242625: Aborting "remove playlist and files" works now
  • #1426680: Ratings that are set to 0 on iPod are now sync'ed
  • #1195852: SmartSync ratings does no longer depend on the songs
being completely played on iPod (rating is synced even if
    lastplaytime has not changed)
  • #1491336: Crash when iPod is mounted as a read-only filesystem
  • #1489378: Dropping file from Explorer into playlist window -> crash
  • #1493820: Tracks out of order in album view
  • #1494028: Memoryleaks when sorting playlists
  • "Sync all playlists" option works now (incl. smart views!)
  • #1494308: Live updating smart playlists with braces messes
    up playlist display on iPod

Please report bugs via the SourceForge bug tracker

Please update soon, as I will no longer answer to requests regarding older versions of ml_ipod. It's just too many bugfixes in this release...

Comments and feedback is welcome here
Enjoy!

Smart Playlist clobbering.

Wow!!

With ml_ipod no longer clobbering iTunes-based Smart Playlists, I've been freed from this horrible situation I'm in right now where I'm trying to plow my way through rating 200+ songs, but must keep that particular iPod off ml_iPod and only on iTunes unless I feel like rebuilding my smart playlists one by one. (I use the smart playlists to pick out the unrated/unplayed/favorably rated songs).

An EXCELLENT piece of news. Thank you!!

And another thing -- I installed ml_ipod 1.40 onto Winamp 5.23 - my first venture past Winamp 5.13 - and it seems to be working just fine. That install step which deletes the potential conlfict in ml_pmp for ipods is great, great, great!

Very thoughtful.

Do you have any songs on your iPod? Did it work with Winamp 5.22? Or with iTunes?

i used it on 5.13 and mlipod 1.30 before i formatted yesterday, and when i reinstalled winamp and mlipod i downloaded the newest versions of both. when i click it the ipod appears like a cd drive in winamp. it says "no blank cd-r in drive". the playlists appear as they should anyway. do i have to format the ipod when i update to wa 5.23/mlipod 1.40? how SHOULD it look in 5.23 with mlipod? where should it appear?

This is where it should appear, under devices (maybe you have to open that subtree first?)

The CD drive shows up under "Rip&Burn", as you see.

You don't have to format the iPod, no, no!

Exclamation IMPORTANT: Please use 1.40 patch 02

Now, what's the deal?
Winamp introduced a new bug with 5.22, that is still in 5.23. It is a bug in the API for plugins. This caused SOMETIMES (not for all users):
  • a crash when your iPod got connected (if "Sync on connect" is on, which it is by default)
  • a crash when you do a "Sync ratings"
  • a crash when you do a "Fix corrupt timestamps".
As I said, it's a Winamp bug, not one of the plugin. But anyway, I found a workaround to that problem. Please use this download page, file iPod_Support_v1_40p02.exe. Let's see when Nullsoft is going to fix their bug.

Actually, I hope that you don't get any crashes now with any Winamp version, if you use this 1.40patch01 ml_ipod.

For those that are interested in the technical details, see my bug report at http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....58#post1958658

Just a hint for those that want use the Video support, and want to see their *.mp4 videos in Winamp, too:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....id=155680#mp4v

Don't ask me anything about video, I don't have any, and no 5G iPod either.

Small request.. Would it be possible to get an option to disable the creation of playlists when you upload new items from Explorer?

Simply drag/drop files, not directories. Select all in a directory, and drag all the files into the ML iPod window...

That can work, but it becomes a little tedious when you need to upload multiple (10+) directories in one go.

Ok, some options:
  • Drag more than one directory at a time (select two or more and drag them) => no playlist is created
  • Open any (dummy) playlist on the iPod and drag directories there => The files are added to the open playlist, no new playlist is created.
  • I just uploaded a new 1.40p04 version. I added a hack for you there: If you hold the Control key down while drag/drop, no playlist is ever created, even if you drop a single directory.

hope that helps.

Maybe try a fresh install of Winamp (now at 5.24) (without the other iPod plugin) then installing ml_ipod.

abu:
I just tested out p09 and it crashes when you go to the Volume tab of the prefs is mp3gain is not installed. (I'm guessing you probably already knew this, but just wanted to mention it incase.)

Question Upgraded and crashing.

I upgraded to the newest WinAmp 5.24. I then faithfully installed this newest ml_ipod version. I then right-clicked on "All Artists" in the Media Library, and selected "Copy to Hard Drive". The program crashed. Over and over again. Restarted computer a few times. I'm lost as to why WinAmp ever came up with that garbage "Portables" mimic - weren't they attracting new users by advertising ml_ipod on Wired and things?

It's a bug; reproducable here.

Umm, no..? I really doubt Will would have some how paid Wired to run a story on the plugin and at the time of the article, I do not believe Will was employed by Nullsoft nor was ml_iPod owned by Nullsoft.

No, I didn't know that, thanks for telling. But badly enough, it works fine here. No crashes, whatsoever. It should make no difference whether mp3gain is installed or not when editing the prefs, only when doing the real normalisation.
Could you explain more, what happens. Do you see the prefs page, or not? Explain as detailed as possible. By looking at the code, I can see no problem at the moment...

I open the the Prefs then go to iPod Support, click on the Volume tab, then a few seconds after, it crashes.

Here's a screenshot:

I've attached the error report also that Windows creates.

Thumbs up crash is fixed

Hi reaper,
the screenshot was really helpful, thanks.
This is fixed now in 1.40p10 (ready for download).
It happened only when NO iPod is attached, that's why I missed that in the first place (I always have a "fake" iPod device attached for development)

Confirmed, that happens with all versions of ml_ipod and all Winamp versions. It's obviousely a very old bug, not an upgrade issue. I've got to see how I can fix it, but a simple workaround is this: Do not right-click on "All artists", but instead
  • single-click on "All artists"
  • select all tracks in the lower pane (press Ctrl-A)
  • right-click on the tracks in the lower pane, select "Copy to Hard Drive" in this menu

EDIT: This is fixed now in 1.40p10 (ready for download).

Huh, never seen anything like that!
Does it change if you click on one of the playlist items?
And then back to the ManGz entry?
You don't have any other plugins installed at the moment, right?

It looks as if it simply does not create the right window at all. Very, very strange.

Strange. Just for a check, rename the ml_disc.dll in the plugins folder to "no_ml_disc.dll" and restart Winamp. How does it look now? (This removes the Rip+Burn capability)

Not really. Must be some kind of conflict between the Cd ripping part of the ML and ml_ipod. But why only at your system, and not everywhere???

If you don't need the CD rip/burn feature, you can just leave it as it is now. But if you need it, I have no idea. Anybody else here in the forum?

I've been trying to stick files on my iPod using the 'Send playlist to...' option, but whenever it gets halfway or so through updating the files on my ipod Winamp gives me the 'Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.' message and shuts down.

Any idea what the problem is?
