Computers Hate Me :(

My computer was acting up lately, my cd-rom was dead (or I thought so because it wouldn't play any cd's in it, and think all the cds are Audio Cds, I'll get to that in a while.). Ok so I had my cd-rw, which I use once a week so I don't overuse it, and its USB, requiring me to install files via Cd, and my DSL which has to of course has to be setup by Cd, and is USB as well. So I decided that since my computer was crashing on me, like it did once where the Active Desktop white background appeared. I kept it on there because its too much a hassle to fix it. Also MP7 jacked up my cd-rom settings, which I think so anyways because that was the last thing I installed before my cd-rom gave way. It would try to play every cd as and audio cd. And wouldn't even play audio cd's that are actual audio cd's. So I said to heck with it, I've tried everything to make my cd-rom work, getting a lens cleaner, blowing air to undust it by aircan. I was supposed to go and get a new cd-rom tomrrow at CompUSA. If everyone knows better, you can copy the Windows98 install files onto hardrive. So I did that via cd-rw which was still working to another part of my hdd which is partitioned in 4 places (1 gig of space for each partition.) I had a folder where all the setup files are for Windows98. I restarted the computer in dos mode. Formatted my whole C drive using /q, and went to my D drive where I had the Windows98 install files (because my cd-rom was dead and I can't use it.) I copied *.* from my D:/win98 directory to C:/. I accidentally forgot to create a folder. Once I realized my mistake, I let it pass, then I reformatted again my C drive, and made a folder for these files, then copied *.* from D:/win98 to C:/win98. Then after I got that squared away, I started to install Windows98. It ran smoothly. I finally got to the conclusion, how am I supposed to make my DSL, my cd-rw, and all my programs work if I don't have an IDE cd-rom. Then thats when I asked my dad to take me to the store to buy a replacement cd-rom tomorrow. When it was all installed, I got up, and picked up my cd-rw cd drivers and attempted to make them work with my quirky cd-rom. Sometimes it works, and it usually fails most of the time, unless I tap it a little. I didn't do anything, and the cd-rom functioned flawlessly. I installed my cd-rw, and then I went to my DSL modem installation. I did the same thing, just pop the cd in the cd-rom, and it worked. I am so mad, because it didn't work. And now I know that MP7 caused my cd-rom to fail before. It must have modified a file because my cd-rw was here before MP7, which I think MP7 confused itself with the cd-rom and messed it up. Now everything is working fine again. Now I just gotta make time to install all my computer programs, from AIM to mIRC, PSP6 to Winamp2x/Beta 3.

Also its not only this computer that I have at home that hates me. Over 200 of these things hate me at school. Like today I was upgrading Windows98 on a sorry Windows95 computer. Its a slow piece of junk, and some people installed some programs that caused the comptuer to freeze, like iMesh. So I had to uninstall all those programs, hard boot it, delete some of the registry files, and even delete the exact program itself to make it stop. I finally got it working after wasting 30 minutes of my time doing this, and wasting an additional 45 minutes watching it install. Well not really, I was fiddling around with Windows2000 (one of our premier machines at the school, theres only one w/2000 that I have access to, which I partly operate at my own will w/out security.) while Windows98 was installing. We have this program called Fortres101, its the most annoying thing that there is. It can't even stop the smartest of people to mess up Windows9x. Even I can bypass security to make things work my way. So I was formatting a cd-rw (used cd-rw which still works) that took 35 minutes to complete.
With all that has happened to me, computers still hate me, no matter how hard they try, and how hard I try to get even with them.

Needs a good kicking if you ask me.

Knowing exactly where to kick it is the trick.

I feel your pain henry. In the Ontario schools, they use a program called 'DeepFreeze'. All this program does is monitors everything being written, edited and deleted on the hdd. It wont let you install any programs, download things, or delete any programs. It's pretty stupid if you ask me but its not hard to get around (and even to delete).

Hah, you've been reading the thinest book in the world "Advanced System Administration" have you?

The usual conversation between myself and fellow sys admins where I work is....

Admin 1) It's fucked.
Admin 2) Give it a kick.
Admin 1) Where abouts.
Admin 2) Who cares.

Once you've done that you can move onto chapter two in the book

Actually kicking it does work sometimes.
One of my old computers had a major hdd failure and all sorts of shit going on. It wouldn't start up at all or anything.
Eventually, I just kicked it on the casing, at the point where the hdd mount is screwed in. Tried turning it on, and it worked fine!

Yeah its that direction the slash goes in, but I'm used to IE so much you're intended to go w/a forward slash than a backwards slash. But for some stupid reason in DOS my brain functions back slash like formatting C:/.

LOL Thats so true for newbies with hardware and software to play with. But when its fized, off they ask the geeks or phone tech help, or give it to a store to fix.

I do my own repairs, and maintenace. I am not a newbie at this kind of stuff. Its just that computers always hate me, whether they like it or not, I'll hurt them back.

Where I "work", there are over 300 Win2K pro machines that I can use at will. If I were admin, that figure would be pushing 400. It's a big place.

And one WinME machine of my very own.

I like Windows2000, and the reason is that I can customize my icons, and what I have on when I log on, its an great thing. I know Windows98 has such a thing, but it sucks. Windows2000 is more secure, you have to type in a password to get in, (even if you don't have a password?) Could someone check on that? I only have Win98 at home, and 2000 at school, and I forgot about that.

ah gee, reformat??? whats reformat??? the windows install i'm running on may be getting a little old, it had win95 installed when win95 was new, and it's just been upgraded from there (from win95, p150, 1.2GB hdd to winXP Pro, dual p3 1.13GHz, dual 20GB in array). and all without a single reformat.

but this machine is an exception, most of my machines need a format every few months

I end up reformatting everything on my computer once in a while. Almost everything, I keep all my files in a certain parition on the computer, format my program files (which are F:/program files instead of C:/program files.) Files in E: drive. And Nothing in D: drive, and C:/windows, and other necessary files. It makes scandisk faster, defrag go quicker, and formatting a cinch. Also it makes Windows98 shave off 1/2 the time to load up all the way. I used to wait 1 minute for it to load. Now it takes 30 seconds or less. *Thats from when the Windows98 splash screen starts. Everyone should partition their drive so they make their computer run faster, save files just in case of a bug crashing Windows, and you don't have to waste your time re-downloading programs because they're already there before...in another part of the drive! ha ha hah ah.!
