With respect to MP3 I prefer lame's --scale switch. I suspect lame applies the gain during encoding in a similar way as mp3gain does without beforehand scaling the input.

Whoops, I kinda said that twice.

I will have another look tomorrow at home where I have my music. I think they are the same ones as they would be for FLAC. I think you write a few extra tags. I remember that the track and album gain and peaks are the same named tags.

The main difference between EBU R128 and ATSC A/85 is a slight difference of the target loudness, EBU R128 is -23 dBFS and ATSC A/85 is -24 dbFS.

If you are free to choose you should prefer EBU R128 or ATSC A/85, depending on where you are located. You can expect the local TV and radio stations to adapt the respective standard in the near future (if not already done).
I think I have you're tagger at home. What is the difference between the db values which I assume are dBFS, and LU and LUFS?

Basically dB(FS) and LU(FS) is the same. LU(FS) seems to be preferred when talking about loudness (LU is short term for loudness unit, but after all it's also decibel).

dBFS and LUFS is used when talking about an absolute value (FS is w.r.t. full scale).

dB and LU is used when talking about relative values, i.e. the difference between two signals.

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

REPLAYGAIN_ALBUM_GAIN=+1.71 dB
REPLAYGAIN_ALBUM_PEAK=0.901167
REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN=+1.25 dB
REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_PEAK=0.817338

Those are according to MP3Tag's Extended Tags page.

Your R128 tool produces those plus: (These are on a FLAC, couldn't work out how to produce AAC from R128)
REPLAYGAIN_ALGORITHM=EBU R128
REPLAYGAIN_REFERENCE_LOUDNESS=-23 LUFS
and two _RANGE values again split into TRACK and ALBUM

Is it from R128GAIN or from MP3GAIN? Is it from AAC encoding? R128GAIN should have unit LUFS instead of dB, at least when in R128 compatible mode.

It is Foobars Replaygain scanner from 1.1.6 "uses libebur128 for improved accuracy"

Apparently it adds APE tags to AAC, and yes those values where from an AAC file, I've no idea why it writes db to the tags, it definitely produces different values than Winamps replaygain scanner which I used previously

What do you see if you run the "ffmpeg -i <file>" on the file? Are the tags displayed correctly?

perhaps you guys know this, but replaygain is simply text tags. it writes db b/c thats the amount of db the file will have adjusted on playback (if enabled by the app or device), to get to the set reference db level.

(mp3gain, by contrast, actually changes bits to the audio itself to do the same, so it works with all apps or devices, but the undo info can be lost and it doesn't work for proper album playback simultaneously)

if i am missing your confusion, excuse this post.

That's probably the answer why FFSoX doesn't see the RG tags: it's simply because FFmpeg doesn't see them, and FFSoX uses FFmpeg as it's input layer.

Unfortunately I don't have any idea yet how to get around this.

EDIT: Have you also tried to tag the file using R128GAIN? R128GAIN uses FFmpeg for input as well as for output.

Possibly you need to upgrade to full FFmpeg, i.e. substitute all FFmpeg DLLs with the latest from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win32/shared/. It's the same as with FFSoX. It ships with a restricted FFmpeg and it should be upgraded to full FFmpeg.

I tried running the R128 exe with this command line:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Audio\Dynamic Range Tools\r128gain.exe" --ffmpeg="C:\utils\FFMPEG\bin" --sox="c:\utils\sox-14-4-0"

But I get :
DlgItemUrl sucessfully loaded.
Error loading SoX.
Hit enter to continue ...

I originally had it (FFMPeg/SOX) in a directory that contained spaces such as
--ffmpeg="C:\Program Files (x86)\Audio\FFMPEG\bin", thinking that might be the problem but I still get the same error, also I tried supplying the exe name, but that makes no difference.

Am I correct in thinking I should select Format=Command from the dropdown?

FFmpeg is not the problem but SoX. The directory pointed to by "--sox=<dir>" should contain "libsox.dll". If it is not there the above error "Error loading SoX" appears.

If you have "libsox-1.dll" instead you should upgrade to the just released latest version: http://r128gain.sourceforge.net/

Done.

I couldn't find libsox.dll in the win32 download, either the zip version or the .exe version which I tried first.

So now I am just pointing it to your tools subdirectory. Now FFMPeg is not loading. Also I don't know how to get Sox to recognise that .m4a is the same as .aac

Maybe there is some basic misunderstanding. If you've downloaded and extracted the r128gain 7z just try to double click "r128gain.exe" from the Windows Explorer. The following window should appear:

This has nothing to do with SoX. You should substitute the FFmpeg DLLs in the sub-folder "r128gain-tools" with their counter parts taken from the latest FFmpeg win32 build found at http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win32/shared/. Having done the FFmpeg upgrade and then double clicking again "r128gain.exe" from the Windows Explorer should bring up the above window again, but now R128GAIN should be aware of much, much more formats and codecs.

I have a quick question regarding ffsox in Winamp. Is it capable of manual entry in the phase response box? From what I understand "Linear" is equal to a phase response of 50%, "intermediate" will be at 25% and "minimum" will be 0%. I tried typing 40% directly into the phase response box to bypass the presets but it crashed. I was just wondering if there's a way to do this?

so wavpack doesn't support RG tags? maybe I misunderstood?

and RG not only sets the reference DB level, but it also has peak level tags, used for preventing clipping. and with winamp, you can adjust the reference level via RG pre-amp.

As you may have noticed there is a new (rewritten) version of the FFSoX Player plugin available since some weeks. The latest version in this series (available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/in-...n_ffsox-2/0.0/) provides some support for transcoding.

The default transcoding configuration is set up with a CD compatible format (please note that ReplayGain is switched on by default and hence will be applied, you may prefer switching it off):

For converting to lossy formats (e.g. AAC) you may prefer the following instead:

Please don't miss to update the FFmpeg DLLs (located in the folder "Winamp/Plugins/in_ffsox") with their respective counterparts from the latest Zeranoe build (http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win32/shared/).

  1. Update the FFmpeg DLLs (i.e. "avutil-52.dll", "avcodec-55.dll", and "avformat-55.dll") from the folder "Winamp/Plugins/in_ffsox"

    with their respective counterparts from the latest Zearnoe FFmpeg build (http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win32/shared/). For extracting Zeranoe's 7z archive you may find it useful to deploy 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

  2. Add "MP4" to FFSoX's list of file extension:

  3. The same applies with any format or codec supported by FFmpeg (http://ffmpeg.org/).

Thanx, I'll try that out.

Edit-Sweet, works like a charm now. Thanx a lot!!
I had entered the mp4 extension earlier, but didn't realize I needed the specific files in the in_ffsox folder.
Downloaded the zip file mentioned, added them, works awesome now.
Now my 1080p mp4 music vids play perfect.
