Vivaldi Web Browser

Anyone tried the new Vivaldi browser ?

Vivaldi aims to be a browser that is fast, but also a browser that is rich in functionality, highly flexible and puts the user first.

https://www.vivaldi.com/

Vivaldi is based on Chrome and is being developed by the original coders of Opera.

You can use Chrome plugins and add-ons with Vivaldi. This is a FREE web browser, and can be used on multiple operating systems.

It's very lite on system resources. (at least on Linux) and is very configurable.

I tried it out for a while, but seemed to run into some fairly significant issues with stability on it.

Not quite sure what caused them honestly though, plus my Win10 install is a crashy beast at the best of times, so take that with a dose of salt.

The word windows says it all I consider myself very fortunate to have overcome the addiction to Microsoft software.

Yup, I have been using it since before it was public, and very basic.
Vivaldi is still beta, so expect some odd variation in behaviour.

It is aimed at power users and ex-Opera users, and is packed with features and customisability.
The main advantage for me, is that you can use it as a portable install and keep your session, cookies, passwords, and footprint in your pocket, while using someone elses PC.
Best of all you get Chrome compatibility without the stink of Chrome.

It still runs another instance for every extension and plugin, so having more functionality without added RAM hogging is where you see a big gain.
Fill it with extensions and it will bloat like any other Chrome clone.

Mashups ? Smells like a lot of "Fishy Business" to me.

I have been testing version 1.3.551.38 for the last week on version 1511 of Windows 10 Home 64-bit. It is very fast and so far has been running without any problems. It came with 3 default plugins (2 for pdf viewing and 1 for enabling Widevine licenses for viewing html video) and no extensions. I did have to install the Chrome Flash plugin in order to play Flash videos on some of the websites I frequent.

Be careful adding extensions and plugins. As Dr.Flay says, in addition to the main app, a separate background process (using various amounts of memory) is ran for every extension, plugin, and open tab you use. The memory associated with a tab is released when a tab is closed. But it appears that even when an extension or plugin is disabled, a small amount of memory is still used for each one that is installed. Vivaldi does not provide a way to uninstall an extension or plugin from within the browser itself. You have to find the folders where they are installed and delete the appropriate files manually.

I already had an app for PDFs, so I wanted to remove Vivaldi's PDF plugins and discovered that I could only disable them. Disabled, they still use less than a megabyte of memory on my computer, so it's not worth looking for and deleting the appropriate files in this case. It may be different for other disabled extensions or plugins.

Fixed that for you
Or at least that's how I imagine most of the people here will read that. Most common video sites prefer HTML5 nowadays.

No, the porn sites I use were fine.

The flash videos were highlight clips on various sports related websites.

Is it compatible with the following extensions?:

AlienTube,
BetterPrivacy,
Greasemonkey,
HTTPS Everywhere,
NoScript,
Privacy Badger,
Reddit Enhancement Suite,
UBlock Origin,
Wiktionary & Google Translate,
Web of Trust,
and YouTube High Definition?

If not then I will be sticking with Firefox for now.

This is a sig of some nature.

Hi Psythik,

8 of the extensions/plugins in your list have compatible versions. There are similar ones for BetterPrivacy, Greasemonkey, and NoScript (some say they're as good or better). I have been testing uMatrix as a replacement for NoScript.

Vivaldi is an offshoot of Chrome. Search the Chrome Web Store for what is available (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps?hl=en).

Vivaldi is a browser for tinkerers

I haven't tried vivaldi browser yet but I have read that vivaldi is also using the same core used in google chrome.

In addition to that, vivaldi is definitely a perfect for those who loves experimenting and customizing or those what we called tinkerers.

And plenty customization options in this browser only shows that the software is actually concerned about the user experience.

Vivaldi has become the browser that I use most often. I'm currently using version 1.8.770.46. There has been bumps along the way, some updates decreased performance and later ones returned or improved the performance level. As with all browsers, it is important not to overload it with 3rd party extensions. Most of what I need is already included.
