Talking Halo: The Movie

It has just been confirmed Alex Garland, author of the beach and 28 days later has finished the script for the proposed Halo movie.

Garland is an avowed games fan, although it's not clear how closely he's followed the plot of the game.

Competing film production companies are now being asked to bid for the rights to make the movie. I just hope it's got a better ending than Halo2.

Hollywood's Halo Effect

Quote:
Master Chief is getting ready for his closeup.

Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox are teaming up to bring to the big screen the Marine protagonist of Microsoft's megaselling shoot-'em-up videogame Halo.

The studios are negotiating with the software giant to transform the popular title into a Hollywood franchise, sources familiar with the talks confirmed Friday.

In the Halo videogame, super-warrior Master Chief and his small band of fighters travel to an alien world to engage the evil human-destroying extraterrestrials known as the Covenant.

The game, which debuted in 2001 on the
Xbox, has been a monster hit, ringing up $600 million in worldwide sales and spawning the new sequel, Halo 2.

However, according to the Hollywood trades, the deal is being complicated by Microsoft's hardball approach. While the software behemoth is used to dictating its own terms in the computer world, those tactics aren't playing well with Hollywood suits.

Microsoft has begun assembling the project outside the studio system, paying 28 Days scribe Alex Garland $1 million to pen the script and hiring former Columbia Pictures executive turned producer Peter Schlessel to help guide the project. The company is demanding a $10 million fee for the rights against 15 percent of the gross, approval over director and cast and 60 first-class plane tickets for company reps and their guests to attend the world premiere.

News that the Redmond, Washington-based software company was shopping a Halo project broke on Monday, when Garland's agents at Creative Artists Agency sent actors dressed in Master Chief garb to deliver the screenplays to the studios.

I'm having trouble conceptualizing a Halo movie.

Speaking of which, I wonder if the movie draws more from the games or the books...

...although, I'm basically certain there'll be a sequel to the movie, since there are three novels and there will be three games next year. So in order for there to be only one movie, it would have to bomb totally.

Ummm, 3 games next year? Really?

I dunno about one movie bombing totally. The Matrix was fine on it's own but add two sequels and the theater starts to smell like ass.

Bill Gates himself was quoted at a press event as saying that Halo 3 would ship simultaneously with the launch of the ps3, to take a chunk out of their sales. Therefore, the next game will be released then, making it the third of three Halo games.

Of course, Bungie has yet to confirm this, but since Microsoft is their financing now, it's pretty obvious Gates will get what he wants as far as a release date.

Now, to reiterate the tone of the previous post, how does an offspring with two heads have anything whatsoever to do with Halo?

How the hell would anyone know that..

But I doubt it, anything that is guarenteed to sell millions and millions of copies isn't going to just stop.

Trust me, there is going to be a Halo 10.

The Matrix stopped at three and it made millions and millions. Should I trust your flawed logic then and expect a Matrix 10?

the matrix was full of itself and tacky with bad ideas for details of a good one with no where to go. it made millions cause everyone was routing for it to go out on its feet, but it got stuck in the hole ass first on the way out. the matrix needs to get remade. the concept of it, eventhough riped off from dark city, is too good to be left alone disgraced as it was.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure we can't trust the word of the developers on the whole Halo thing. Why? Because Microsoft sources say they were working on Halo 2 & 3 concordantly (and to make a next-year release date, they'd have to have been) yet Bungie still says that Halo 3 still exists only in the fans' minds.

Part of me wishes that someone would do a HalfLife movie, but part of me doesnt.

If they do do a Halo movie, who would they get to be Master Cheif?

My only question about the Halo movie is: will the actor be speaking, or will they use the voice actor from the game?

I think the voice is all-important since you never actually see the guy.

Yeah but you have to expect writers/directors to want to actually show who the actor is, even if you never saw him in the game..

Movies have a way of fucking up game plot lines like that...

Dude, in Halo 2 at some point, you almost get a glimpse of his hideously reptilian looking head as he adorns his helmet. He looks Kardassian in his neck.
