Can you be a little more specific? What happens when you try to play MP3s "on-line"
What browser? What happens? |

Then don't select MP3 in Quicktime, sounds like it resolves the issues to me.

Yes, I already posted that, but you did not say that it didn't work.
Please stop making new threads on this topic. You posted about this before, but never replied to JonnyMac's latest post in that thread. By starting new threads, you're cross-posting, which is against the Forums Rules. Basically, this is a QuickTime issue, not a Winamp issue. For some reason QuickTime is opening MP3s clicked on in Internet Explorer. If you want to stop QuickTime opening your MP3s, either uninstall Quicktime (and install QuickTime Alternative instead) or go to the QuickTime forums (if they exist) for support. |

@ Bamahusker
Do your self a favor and uninstall the evil OuickTime as siebe83 suggested. Unless you want to listen/watch QuickTime formats I don't think it is necessary to install the QuickTime Alternative. After going through QT's options to try and find an answer for you, I was hit by the same issue your are having. MP3s from the internet were playing in the QT browser plug-in instead of Winamp. This happened in Firefox and IE. Like you MP3 was not selected in the QT 'Browser plug-in' & 'File Types' settings. I uninstalled the evil QT crap from my system and I am a very happy camper now. |

Did you see siebe83's reference for QuickTime Alternative? I have never used it my, supposedly it allows you to play local and web QuickTime content.

Did you click on siebe83's link? It will bring you to a QT Alternative page. In that page click on the Download in the description box.

You MUST uninstall QuickTime (via: Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) before installing QuickTime Alternative.
Other than that, if you want any further help, the least you could do is tell us what your Windows OS and browser/version are :/ |

Ok... so you've uninstalled QuickTime c/o Windows Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, and you've installed QuickTime Alternative, but the problem persists, yes/no?
The only other thing I can do is to prepare a .bat file which will export some registry keys to a text file, and then you can attach said text file here for me to examine... and if the text file shows the problem, i can then prepare a registry fix. However, these things take time (especially, if like me, you're busy doing other stuff, and the work you put in here is totally voluntary, ie. unpaid), so you need to be patient - please. In the meantime, maybe you could attach a HijackThis log here for us to examine? |

nothing in hijack that is unusual
i can do a hijack post but i already scanned previously and saw nothing unusual that was on my pc that would cause my problem to happen. secondly, this quicktime alternative does not sound like it'd work. i had problems with windows media player once on something and someone suggested media player alternative and it didn't help at all. In any case if you still want a log, here it is:

QuickTime Alternative works just fine. It also comes with a browser plugin for IE, Netscape, and/or Firefox browsers. Believe me, it's a much simpler solution than the one I suggested in my previous post. Alas, I ain't gonna install QuickTime just to see what damage it's doing to the registry/MIME settings, heh.

Yeah, I saw this
![]() O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime The HJT log is clean though, heh. How comfortable are you with dealing with/editing the registry via regedit? |

well i went to my startup using msconfig and i removed quicktime at startup already. i don't mind going into regedit but they say doing that can screw up your pc but i can do it as long as it won't hurt it.

Bamahusker,
I was having the EXACT same problem as you till about an hour ago. I found the fix here You have to go in the registry via regedit, but it was an easy fix. in the registry, go to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\ then scroll down till you see the audio/ folders. Click on an audio/ folder. To the right you will see the name CLSID and a data value. The data value for winamp is {cd3afa76-b84f-48f0-9393-7edc34128127} The data value for quicktime is {02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B} Go through the audio/ folders and make sure they are all set to the winamp value. For me only one needed to be changed, audio/mpeg. Once I changed that the problem went away and i've had the happiest single hour of my life. hope this helps. |

Thanks for the info.
{cd3afa76-b84f-48f0-9393-7edc34128127} is actually the clsid for Windows Media Player, not Winamp. But yeah, simply removing the relevant clsid key will fix the problem. I've attached a .reg file to do just that (unzip mp3regfix.reg from the zip and double click it to merge with the registry). Note: The regfix is for Win 2k/XP/2003 only, not 9x/ME If any Win 9x/ME users need an auto reg fix, just let me know here. Edit: Use the following .reg fix instead of the one attached to this post: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....66#post1810666 |

Ahh, windows media player, that makes much more sense. I saw the abbreviation WMP, and was thinking that was shorthand for winamp. Thats just how excited i was to fix finally get this fixed. Thanks for the regfix file. I keep it for future use.

I'm going to make a more complete reg fix for you, but in the meantime, can you provide us with an example of an mp3 website that you're experiencing the problem with? The reason I'm asking is just to know if the links on the sites are direct links to .mp3 files, or if they are links to .m3u playlist files (which then link to the mp3 files).
Also tell me if 'Play' or 'Enqueue' is the default action in Winamp... ie. if "Enqueue files on double click in Windows Explorer" is checkmarked or not in: Winamp > Prefs > File Types (I need to know this value for the reg fix I'm preparing for you). And whilst you're in there, try de-selecting then re-selecting both of mp3 and m3u in the Extension List, make sure "restore file associations on winamp startup" is checked, then close prefs, close winamp, reopen winamp. |
