what the hell am i going to do with only 12 notes? i've spent 11 years of my life studying them, playing them, changing order i play them, how long i play them, how loud, what tone . . . it's getting old, how i am supposed to write something new? grrrrrr! and it only gets worse when you switch from diatonic to pentatonic (or however it's spelled)

There may be only 12 notes, but an infinite ways in which they can be combined. There are only 26 alphabets, but that didn't stop John Milton and Dante Alighieri from writing radically different books (on the same subject, no less!).

Explore Indian music. They use microtones and that brings the scale up to 24 (?) notes.

you forget to account for my feeble mind, trying to produce something original after hundreds of years of brilliant diatonic music . . . the microtones ideas a good one, i should try that

Yeah I know how you feel sometimes I am composing something and I can only use one chord and I get stuck in three notes and sometimes I can use four but usually it is just three and I get really annoyed and I try to use a different octave but that doesn't work and I get really pissed off and I end up going over and over and round and round on the same three notes and it makes me so angry! And ...
