Submitting skins...thread #427364286428364

When oh when oh when is that skin submission crap gonna be sorted? It`s just taken me 2 isps, 3 new browsers and 2 hours of time to try and submit one skin. It uploads but fails tokick back to the list of currently submitted skins. Occasionally the upload bar in IE/etc jumps straight to 100 percent and nothing else happens.
I`ve submitted now. But you know the score: During those lost 2 hours there have been about 928374289374 skinner.exe-generated skins submitted by newbies that will cost me about a week of waiting to get published - while the reviewers trudge through their crap.

Happens to most of us sometime or another.

Netscape doesnt seem to like the upload process for some reason. IE usually works.

In windows explorer, go to tools > folder options > view > and tick show file extensions.

That will show the extension as *.zip and will allow you to change it to .wsz

Another option is if youre using winzip (not sure with other programs) to name the file with an extension like .ws or some other extension that isnt recognised. That way you can just rename it to .wsz without having to go through the folder options routine every time you wish to make a .wsz file.

WHAT THE HELL DID YOU SAY??

Listen up and listen good. Before you go and download any skinning program and begin to take any pride that your favourite picture of (in most cases) some half naked chick made into a winamp skin considering the following:

1) There hasn't been any program generated skin that has broken 2K downloads. most don't break 200 downloads. NO ONE likes program generated skins

2) Friends don't let friends using programs for skinning winamp

3) As the TRUE skinner at the start mentioned, these program generated winamp skins have clogged the reviewers so that the real skins takes much longer to process. Stop pissing us off

4) After 20 program generated skins, they all look the same. No one will reconginze your skin or give a damn about it

5) If you do upload one of your program generated skins you will probably try to say something like, "this is my first skin." in truth, you have yet to make a skin. skinamp (or whatever the hell program you use) has created that skin. You simply picked a picture you liked. Until you open adobe photoshop or paintshop pro, you have yet to "make" a skin. Don't take credit that belongs to the programmer of your winamp skin proggie.

cptlee your attitude towards skinning progs is uncalled for.

In fact skinning programs can be extremely helpful for cutting out the bitmaps for picture skins so the maker can then add their own buttons.

Not everyone wants to spend hours making a skin manually, and while its fine to encourage people to use psp, photoshop etc. Saying things like
Quote:
NO ONE likes program generated skins
Thats completely untrue....There are plenty of generated britney skins that have thousands of downloads.

Personally i dont like skins made by skinning programs, but if someone would rather make a skin the easy way rather than the manual way i dont really have a problem with it.

If you dont like generated skins then dont download them. But dont be harsh to people for using them. They give very average results, and they do make the review process take longer, and it's extremely annoying when people submit 10 a day.

so....?

So let's see if I understand this correctly... A person finds one of the many pictures of brittany half naked and runs it through the skinning program. It gets a couple thousand downloads... Yet, there are very few program generated skins that can get that many downloads. And you said it yourself, you hate waiting for other skins to be downloaded and people spamming with their skins. So I fail to see where the good of having those kinds of skins uploaded is. If you take a look at sondicated or zeus or other big name skins, you'll see that the number of downloads that they have gotten have equaled or bested the number of program generated skins downloaded. We are left with the conclusion that people perfer orginal skins. It is increasingly harder and harder to find these orginal skins due to the mass amount of program generated skins. So I'm sorry, dude, no one likes them. YOu don't download them and quite frankly, the reason brittany skins are downloaded so heavily is because the boys downloading them have net nanny or are too young to find porn.

Ummm why is it hard to find original skins?? Generated skins go straight into the generated category when theyre published. The only other place you'll see them is on the newest skins list.

So basically you have every other category to browse that is skinner.exe free.

You dont have to create a template yourself.

http://www.winamp.com/skins/detail.j...ponentId=71571

One of the best templates available. Includes just about every file needed to skin winamp in easy to use template form.

Aside from photoshop, you could use paint shop pro, or Mspaint if youre really crazy

Yeah

Starting from scratch is the best way to learn. And then you'll figure out all kinds of ways of shortening the process as well as stretching the limits of what you can do with winamp.com. These skins were my first skins made in paintshop pro.

http://www.winamp.com/components/det...mponentId=3301

http://www.winamp.com/components/det...mponentId=3650

Then I got Adobe Photoshop and a few years later and now my latest skin is this:

http://www.winamp.com/components/det...ponentId=45838

http://www.winamp.com/components/det...ponentId=68038

http://www.winamp.com/components/det...onentId=100998

So I hope that you will have patience and make the best skin in the world. Have patience. It took me 4 weeks to do my first skin. And it was horrible. But, as you can see, I got better. MUCH BETTER.

I, for one, have to agree with cptlee about the skinning progs. Sure, it's good to begin with and for people who really don't want to take the time to make something extravagant, and even for people who want to take some shortcuts after making one from scratch, but in the long run, I can't stand them. I just can't.

Oh, and that template skin? I don't know why that's getting such rave reviews. I downloaded it a while ago and coudln't stand it. Whatever posessed the creator to put a checkered pattern on there is beyond me. That screws the entire thing up. In my opinion, there is only ONE decent template out there. And it's this:

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation.php?id=69246

Keep in mind, it's a TEMPLATE. Colors don't matter a lick. To make it easier on the eyes, I just converted all the colors in Paint to things more manageable like white, red, and green, but THAT is the ultimate template in my opinion. It's perfect and has helped me a lot. (Wish I had it when I was making my first skin.)

So, skinning progs? Blech.

well

I use the road waffles skin for my template. Don't know why but now i know that I can't go back. I think that not having the original skin there helps me to be more creative. But skinning programs, even if you're starting out skinning, is no good. If you want to learn, you have to dive in and spend hours making a crappy skin. Then you will know how to make better skins. My first skin just about made me throw up. *bleetch*

I spent hours and hours making my first two crappy skins as well. I dare not post the links. But they definitely aren't from skinning programs. Hours of hard work in Photoshop. I only use that template to know where my drawing limits are and where I should cut and paste for the skin itself. It's just a very useful tool.

don't worry, skinning takes a lot of time and practice. All of the best skins take days to finish, even weeks and months in some cases.

the monster.bmp and shufrep.bmp are the weird files that for whatever reasons, are backwards. What I mean is that for the shufrep, the first 29 pixels from the left are placed on the RIGHT side of the monoster.bmp and the next 29 pixels are place on the LEFT side of the monoster.bmp. They are backwards. The shufrep is the hardest thing in the world to skin. It takes forever and the fact that everthing but the EQ and PL buttons is backwards doesn't help matters any. I hope that helps... don't know if it will though...

Damn right!

I coulndt agree more. I published a skin once and had to wait for months to get it reviewed. The other week I sat down browsing new skins. The first non-generated skin was at, ohh i dont know, maybe 4000??!! Sad thing really, cause I dont think it will ever stop...

Thats kinda weird....Considering the most recent skins category only holds 1000 skins...

Skinner.exe skins are published before the good stuff because they only recieve an 'approved, thank you for your submission' as a comment.

It takes time to download, check that all windows are done, see if there are any bugs, check windowshades modes, the easter egg, then assign a star rating and write in a comment. All from a reviewer who doesnt get paid, and rarely gets thanked for doing this.

If you dont want to wait for your skin to be published here then make your own website or try deviantart or 1001winampskins etc.
