Nobody Knows(English Title)
Depressed? Watch this all the way through, and you will either jump in front of the next bus, or smack yourself for whining about your problems! Artfully acted(best performance by a young kid you are likely to see in quite awhile) and very well directed. On IFC this month.

Star Trek (the one playing in theaters)

Good one to see on a big screen with good sound. It's not better or worse than other Star Trek movies, but worth the trip. There was a great line in it too - someone asked Spok "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?" (meant to sound like "Are you out of your fucking mind?"). I'm not one to ******dly laugh during a movie, but that caught me by surprise.

edit - the o u t w a r filter stuck again... The ****** should read o u t w a r without spaces. They need to fix that.

Underworld - Rise of the Lycans

I really liked this movie. It was a lot better than I expected. Good special effects. Lots of werewolf/vampire action. A kind of neat plot.

Defiance - Based on the true story of the Bielski partisans who were Jewish resistance fighters in Belorussia during WWII.

This could have been a great movie, it just fell a little short. I give it a B. The story of Tuvia Bielski and his brothers is a little more interesting than this movie paints.

A Walk in the Clouds (1995)

I think Keanu Reeves best movie. It was romantic. It was pretty. Worth a rent. Got it on Starzplay. Anthony Quinn was cool. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón.... what a cutie...

Tsotsi (2005)
In Johannesburg, the small time criminal Tsotsi is a teenager without feelings, hardened by his tough life. Something happens to change everything... (Not the kind of movie I usually seek out, but it sounded intriguing and, yes, was it a good one.)

I take everything with a grain of salt.

You couldn't go very wrong with selections from Bogart's filmography:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000007/

Some of my favorites are Sabrina, Dead Reckoning, The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not and High Sierra.

Check out some of these less known films instead of watching The Caine Mutiny, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca or Treasure of the Sierra Madre again

There is no such thing as a bad Bogie movie.

For my own viewing this week, I have been watching some of Mission Impossible Season 1. I was just a little kid in 1967, so I grew up on later episodes of Mission Impossible and reruns usually featuring Peter Graves as Mr. Phelps.

The leader of the IMF was initially Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill in this first season. Barbara Bain won Emmy's in 67, 68 and 69. It was deserved.

I'm half way through the 7 disk set. Good stuff.

Public Enemies

As expected, it would have been a great movie if it weren't for the annoying presence of C. Bale. Depp did an excellent job though.

So, the joy of Netfix is you can have a "Saved" movie lists which are basically movies that haven't come out yet. So last spring I added what were supposed to be all the summer blockbuster movies. They sit there at the bottom of the page and I forget about them, eventually they get a DVD/Blu-Ray release date and the pop in the queue. If it turns out after the movie release the movie is other crap I remove it. Sometimes I forget to remove it and it slowly makes it way up to the top of my lists and a few days later it shows up in my mailbox to my dismay. That being said.....

Dragonball: Evolution - Back in college two of my roommates were huge fans of Dragonball and Dragonball Z animes. (This is what caused me to avoid anime for years. Later I found myself a casual fan, but I don't consider myself an anime fanboy or anything, but that is besides the point. The point is that I am aware of the source material). First off it seems this movie has no idea what it wants to be. It starts off as a martial arts movie, movies quickly to teen angst drama, tries to be humorous but still have a "serious" plot. I can say the plot makes sense, it is retarded, but at last I could follow it. Now the acting the character development and the action scenes, they are just utter crap. The two random separate romances show up with very little development (though one is way rose then the other). Plus it doesn't even redeam its slef with the female cast. Fighting femals but tehre is a severe lack of gratutious tight/leather outfits (they need to take a hint form the Underworld series, or even the DOA movie). 1 out of 5.

[I did watch the entire movie, and there have been some movies I couldn't make it all they way though, so that might be a slight 1+ rating there. Then again, unlike my old DVD player the Blu-Ray player on 2X Fast Forward still plays audio. So A half hour in when I realized there is still 50 minutes to go, I can get though it all in a cool 25 minutes.]

A little hint with Netflix. If you want a new release and don't want to wait forever, make it the only movie in your queue.

Horsemen

Horsemen is interesting only for the performance of Ziyi Zhang as "Kristin" the gentle foster child turned demon. It has a Dennis Quaid performance that fell flat.

The script could have found something interesting to do with the biblical reference to the four horsemen of the apocalypse that is the basis of the story. It doesn't.

Despite a bunch of gore, including an aborted baby in a plastic bag, I fell asleep on this stinker twice before finishing it.

Knowing

I've never watched a Nicolas Cage movie that I haven't liked. Given that, "Knowing" was a bit of a disappointment. The special effects were awesome, the story line was engaging, but I think the end got pretty contrived and Disneyesque. I couldn't really explain further without a spoiler.

Fair. It was worth a dollar from Redbox I guess.

Valkyrie

OK, so Tom Cruise movies almost always make me choke, but like Last Samurai, even a stopped watch is right twice a day.

My favorite Cruise line is from Mission Impossible 2. "You've never seen me really angry!" I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Maybe he was gonna call Nicole Kidman to kick some ass

This movie is about the plot to kill Adolph Hitler during WWII. We all know what happened. That makes the ending sort of predictable. It's about the only thing I can think that is a negative for this movie.

Tom Cruise doesn't seem like as much of a rodent as usual. The cinematography is excellent. The story is suspenseful and well done. Even Tom couldn't spoil it.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This movie is L....ONG! Benjamin Button is born old, turns into stud muffin Brad Pitt and de-ages into a baby.

The critics loved it. The sets were beautiful and won Oscars. Too gooey, soppy for my taste. Too superficially formula clever for it's own good and at 166 minutes... way too long... Maybe a fair chick flick.

The Soloist
Trailer

Robert Downey Jr. plays a LA Times reporter who befriends a schizophrenic street musician who is really messed up mentally, but is a very talented musician.

It's touching. It's well acted. It's a good story. It's original. I liked it.

Pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen so many bullets fired in a movie before. Interesting plot premise.

M*A*S*H is a classic, but I really liked the TV show better. If I was going to pick a movie along the same lines, I go with Kelley's Heroes.

Sometimes you run into a B science fiction movie that is so bad that it's good. This one doesn't qualify.
