Your Thought on a really pricey wedding ring...

A question for both genders. Guys, do you feel the need to go all out and spend your entire bankroll on an engagement ring to please your girl?

Girls, does the size of the ring actually increase how much love you feel for your man?

I dont have a ton of money in my bank account but the ring I brought home for my girlfriend the other day she said was to small so that was disappointing and now I don't know what to do. So, what's your opinion?

The wedding ring should be a symbol for the size of your bank account. After all that's why she wants to marry you.

Or maybe not?

^ You ol' Romantic, you.
Hey, start with a nice small ring and after twenty years, if you want to get her a bigger ring for an Aniversary, that's fine. I'd rather have a puppy. Or, Furniture. Or a shopping spree, or...Oh, sorry...>>>>>>>>

Can't really answer that for you - it's about how you two look at money together.
The ring is a symbol of your relationship. I'd say that if you can afford it, get a good one, you'll have your entire life to pay for it. If you can't afford it or if you two don't really care much about price of the ring, get a 'normal' one. Discuss it.

Jesus loves you [yes, you] so much, he even died for you so that you will not need to die, but live forever

Well, if she demands an expensive ring...

In earlier days women wore coins on their dresses to show off their husband's wealth. Now, thanks to De Beers marketing, it's shiny rocks (mined in Africa under inhuman conditions, but don't let that spoil your honeymoon).

As greedy as I am, I will not wear diamonds. Although, I know Russia mines them as well. You can ask for Country Of Origin. I would, if I wore them, which I won't. I have a massive heady-ache.

I actually partially designed the wedding ring both my wife and I have. Due to her profession, it's got a very small diamond (non-african) in it. Only two rings like it in the world ...

Actually, about five years after we were married, I saw one strikingly similar in a Tiffany's ad in some magazine. Wanted $15k for it. I lol'ed.

sometimes it's the thought that counts.

I dunno about that Widdy. The jeweler that I had make my wife's was pretty upset at the design/difficulty. Poor guy broke his mold making it too.

A few years later when we got married and had mine made, we used a different jeweler (one my father-in-law had used and trusted for years). He got pretty upset over the difficulty when he first saw it too. Tried to say parts of the ring were not possible to make --- until we showed him my wife's. He was able to make it and he did not break his mold of it in the process.

First post? Is this an ad? Are we on Candid Camera?

I *made* Ryan spend less on my ring than he wanted to. Neither of us makes much and I'd rather save the money for important things.

I think it depends on what one thinks is important. If I were into getting married and got engaged, we might decide on something for the house(or apt.) or a trip, or something else that has nothing to do do with an engagement ring. It depends on what you both want. I'd want something other than jewlery. But everyone is different.

I think if I was getting married, the lady ought to have a nice diamond. It'd be just kinda "ghetto" otherwise. Frankly, I would be sort of embarrassed were it any other way.

I think some of this customary stuff is important to abide.

iomegajaz and I are cheap bastards, my engagement ring I picked out online cause it was on special ($120.00) and the stones are aquamarine, my birth stone. His wedding band is just a simple 12k band.

I'm not big on jewelery, although I do like a bit of window shopping (just too much of a cheap bastard)

I am fond of traditions, also. I might do like Shy and go for pearls.(If he had an excess of money) And too much bling is very ghetto to me.
But Estate Jewelery(like Grandma's ring) is nice and doesn't create a new market.
But, to each his/her own...I'm not the last word on this.

I don't have an aversion to used diamonds. They are a bargain you can't pass up. I would probably use a new setting though. Probably platinum. More durable.

I think my whole look on the topic, is if you can afford the splashy diamond ring, then go for it. But, if you have to take out a loan (like someone I know) that will take five years to pay off, then it's probably not the best way to start off your married life, in a huge debt.

Same thing for the wedding, we were dead broke and we got married with food and all for less than $800. I personally feel that way too much money is being spent on the "average" wedding by people that really can't afford it. I could do a lot more with $50,000 throughout years than what's done on a day.

Hell, if mikeat's girl is being that much of bitch about the ring, then run the fuck away.

Canada too. In the 1980's about 20% of the diamonds available were "blood diamonds". This number has been radically reduced, but it's not none. On the other hand, diamond sales finance good things too. Liberia and Congo, once notorious black market diamond sources, now meet the criteria for selling legitimate stones.

Before marriage, an expensive ring possibly symbolizes a tangible symbol of love proportional to the price...Love can't always be measured by money, but where it can be, it's a good measurement...

After divorce, it's becomes both a symbol and a literal recovery from capital losses, especially if you sell it to a jeweler...It's not like this was your first diminished return anyway...

Well, thank you. I try not to step on too many toes. I have to stay nice to online friends. Here on Winamp (and on instant messaging/video chat), I get to keep friends "local". In real life I keep having to move every so often due to the job market. It's going to happen yet again this summer, possibly to WV of all places. Kinda makes it hard to keep good buds, but online, they're always in the same place, regardless where I live.

1978-1996 Western Pennsylvania populated rural
1996-2001 Eastern Ohio urban
2001-2002 Western Ohio urban
2002-2007 Central Ohio very urban
2007-2009 Central South Dakota insanely rural
2009-2011 Western Iowa insanely rural
2011- WV? I'll explain that one better when more details become finalized.
If I had my choice I'd stick with PA, but I may find somewhere as good or better.

Don't forget to live before you die.

Hi dear gaekwad! don't mind if I disagree with you...well...the girl never wed you if she is not inspired from...this is fact that the wedding ring must be a symbol of your bank account but this is not necessary...she will also accept when you give her a bit minor ring...

If she needs to be inspired by a ring maybe it's better not to marry her.

And having a rule that it must cost at least two month's salary, how utterly romantic...

I agree; she should agree to marry you regardless of whether or not there is a token object given. I was proposed to; so I didn't give a ring until after being engaged for a while.
