Nickel or Five Cents?

What do you prefer to call it and why?

I prefer to call it Five Cents, you know why?

Because the US "Nickel" is made of a Cupro-Nickel Compound, THE SAME EXACT COMPOUND used in dimes, quarters, 50 cent peices, and silver dollars. So essentially, when someone says, "can I borrow a nickel?" they could actually be meaning, can I have a quarter/dollar/etc.

Nickel, because I call every coin by its 'proper name' Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half-Dollar, and Dollar piece.

I came for the hatred.

"Hey, can you give me a nickel?" - you get a nickel

"Hey, can you give me five cents?" - you might get five pennies, and no one wants that

So at the 99 cent store, you get a copper back when you buy something with a dollar?

A five cent piece is officially called a nickel, that's it's name. Therefore I call it by it's name.

Shit, my point made no sense.

Anyway, when you call 5 cent piece a nickel, you are calling it by it's name and not describing it properties.

Same thing as calling an orange by another name. When you ask for an orange, no person in their right mind is going to bring you a carrot since it's orange. Same goes for the nickel.

Nickles are made of 75% copper and 25% nickle

from 1942 to 1945, though, they were made of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese.

I call them nickles, btw.

I use the term nickel.

In Mississippi, there is a chain of stores called Jitney Jungle. Jitney, as shown below, is an old slang word for nickel. mi

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.

jitney

SYLLABICATION: jit·ney
PRONUNCIATION: jtn
NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. jit·neys
1. A small motor vehicle, such as a bus or van, that transports passengers on a route for a small fare. 2. Archaic A nickel.
ETYMOLOGY: Origin unknown.

Same as in Canadian currency, except the loonie ($1 coin different from the silver dollar, we have those too).

I call it 5 cents because that is precisely what it is, or we can all start calling it a beaver. (All the Canadian's laugh now ).

"Welcome to the Island of people who know too much."..."Did you really think balloons would stop him?!"
See what I'm listening too.
