Upsampling to 24/96

Hi,

I am using Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Winamp version 5.621. I have a
24/96 capable sound card and a 5.1 speaker setup. I use the Matrix Mixer
output plugin to upsample my stereo 16/44.1 MP3s to 24/96 5.1 before sending
the result to Winamp's DirectSound output plugin. I also use the iZotope Ozone
DSP plugin to further "enhance" the sound. This all works very well (great sound
from all 6 channels).

I know Winamp has an "Allow 24 bit" option and I assume the processing string
is input decoder to DSP to output. My questions are:

1. Does the Winamp 24 bit upsampling occur before or after the DSP processing?
2. Does Winamp do true upsampling or padding?
3. I have set Windows audio controls to allow exclusive mode and 24/96 bit depth
and sample rate for shared mode. Is Winamp an exclusive or shared mode application?

Found the answers to my questions and found a better output plugin than
DirectSound in the process.

Answers
1. Winamp's 24bit upsampling occurs before DSP processing.
2. Winamp does true upsampling.
3. Winamp's DirectSound output plugin operates in shared mode.

Better output plugin is the WASAPI Output Plugin 'Maiko' created by Evgeny Stets.
Warning...It lacks a crossfade feature like what's in DirectSound, if you use that.

Now I use Matrix Mixer just for upmixing stereo to 5.1 and Maiko for upsampling.

I'm resurrecting this thread - the Wasapi plugin is quite promising, however I wonder if there is a different upsampler plugin for Winamp?

Wasapi uses very much CPU and only works under Vista or better (well, even Microsoft stopped supporting WinXP officially, I know... but still...)

Wasapi isn't possible on XP (it's a Vista+ OS API).

Hi hightype,

The Maiko plug-in seems to have been abandoned (no one has heard from it's developer in over 2 years) and it causes problems with some features in the latest version of Winamp. I had started using it to upsample and upmix. So, I'm back to using Matrix Mixer (latest version: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winampmatrixmix/) for upmixing. The iZotope Ozone DSP plugin is not compatible with Windows 7 and the latest version of Winamp, so I've stopped using it too.

I have also stopped upsampling. Only the process that Maiko was using improved the sound quality for me. I'm still testing various DSPs, currently using "Stereo Tool".

Thanks for the reply!
The Ozone Winamp is discontinued a long ago... however, MatrixMixer seems like the thing I was looking for (upsampling), I have to see how to get it to work. Great tip, thanks again!
